If you like, or are interested in Native American history, Oklahoma is the place to be. It was called "Indian Territory" until it became a state in 1907. Five indian tribes-the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Seminole, and Creek Indians, were forced to relocate there from the southeastern part of the United States, in the 1830's by the U.S. Army.
On April 22, 1889, it became Oklahoma territory. A gun was shot so that the settlers could go ahead and claim their land. They became known as "sooners", and today, Oklahoma is nicknamed "The Sooner State."
From Oklahoma City, drive east on I-44 about 100 miles to Tulsa which lies in the middle of green country-Oklahoma is seperated into 5 regions, Red Carpet Country, Great Plains Country, Lake Country, Frontier Country, Kiamichi Country, and Green Country-a region known for lakes, wooded hillsides, and farmlands. Tulsa is called the "Oil Capital of the World." Why? Because it is home to many oil companies.
