SLAVES IMPRESSED FOR SERVICE ON THE NORTH-WESTERN RAILROAD IN TN

Willie L. Robinson
Nashville, TN

The purpose of this website is to provide the names of some of the Tennessee slaves who were impressed for service on the North-Western Railroad on October 1863. The work was done on the railroad generally between Nashville and New Johnsonville. This information was complied by John V. Brogden in 1998 using sources at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tennessee. Following each name is information on age, height, name of owner and where each slave lived:

NOTE:

As of March 09, 2001, I have copies (five pages) of the document which contains all the available names of slaves impressed for service on the North-Western Railroad in October 1863. The name of the document is "Roll of Negroes Impressed for Service on the North-Western Railroad."

There are a total of 240 names on the document. Although most of the workers were from Tennessee, a few were from Kentucky. In addition to the information provided on this website, the roll also contains information to show the complexion of the workers, the date each was impressed, and in some cases there are other remarks noted.

I plan to update the website to contain all the names on the roll, or at least all the ones I can read. This task, however, will take time. In the meantime, I am willing to check the roll for a specific name upon request and provide a response as time permits. Anyone requesting such service is asked to sign my guestbook and post the request there. Please be patient, as the document is handwritten and in some cases the writing is difficult to read.

Again, I am be willing to response to a request for information on specific name if the request is posted in my guestbook.
