Contemplating Lilies

I sprinkled lily petals on her as she drew my dog's reflection
Her pencil kissed the paper as I gazed beneath her skin
I wish I could have kissed her
Or told her something deep
Just to make her brush her hair aside
And make her look at me
At me
To make her somehow see
I kept my mouth shut firmly
And contemplated lilies
My dog just raised an eyebrow like he knew, somehow
He'd seen

We walked back to my front yard
The petals in her hair
She silently removed them and left them with the dog
She softly whispered something ~ It must have been
goodbye ~
And I contemplated lilies
As she walked out of my life

The lilies must have withered
The petals blown away
But every time I see those flowers
I'm reminded of that day
I contemplated lilies
And let her walk away
