THIS WAS LIFE

M. Chastain Addington

I tried in this feeble hour to be alive.
I tasted blood and sweat and rain and dark.
I cried freedom and screamed torment.
I died slowly, I cringed quickly.

And this was life,
Leering at me
Through badly tinted windows
On primer grey cars
With primer grey lives inside.
Little eyes not knowing
That this was life.
That this feeling in the tummy,
That pull, that tear-
That that was life.
That pain was life.
That love... was

Life.

So there I was.
Alone and frightened.
Lost, dead, numb.
But I could say to myself,
"You lived."
And I could remember breath.
I could still feel a kiss.
Ah, this was life.

The world hasn't been such a nice place lately. But let's just remember
that we're all human and all struggling and all need each other. Life is
all we have sometimes.
