1998 - 1999
The Magic Of Merlin

It was a unique season. Due to Elvis' injury, he did not have as much time as he usually has to prepare his programs. I found it fascinating to watch the progression of Merlin. When we first saw it at Skate America and Skate Canada, the mime movements had not been added yet. The costume looked similar to that which he wore for Dragonheart. I found that interesting because the movies, Dragonheart and Merlin were also very similar. With each new competition, costume changes were made and additional movements were added to the program. By the time the World Championships arrived, Elvis had perfected the mime movements leaving us all mesmerized. The costume had also been perfected. It combined the best of all of the earlier costumes - a royal color combination of rich burgandy and gold with gothic dragons emblazoned on his shoulder.

We were all there with him in spirit for each competition willing him to do his best. It was an uphill battle, fighting to overcome the previous season's injury. But in true Elvis style, he fought that battle with everything he had and he never gave up. That fighting spirit is worth more than a gold medal!

In my own way, I won the battle
because I didn't give up.

Elvis, whenever you step out on the ice you are a reminder that the possibilities are endless; the only limitations are those that we place on ourselves. You have shown us that by remaining true to ourselves and never giving up no matter what obstacles we encounter, none of our dreams are out of reach. You are an inspiration to us all!!
