A gentle wind whispers in my ear
that the summer is almost over,
and reminds me of the beauty
that it held.
Most of all I remember the trees,
their brances spread upward,
aiming for a star they never reach.
Their leaves, so tender,
dance in the warm summer breeze,
telling their own story.
A story unique and inspiring,
of how they, too, reach for a star
they can not reach.
Yet they, as the trees, keep trying
and set an example for us all.

Gone are the flowers
Summer is ending
Drifting slowly away like a breeze
on the ocean.
The flowers are wilting,
kissing goodbye the sun.
There leaves fading away,
wishing their neighbors a safe winter.
Third Place

The cool breeze tickles your neck,
Ruffles your hair.
Apple blossoms long gone,
replaced by large, red apples.
Summer's last flowers,
Once bright, now brown.
Leaves from great trees,
Spiraling slowly down.
Sun's rays grace us less and less
each day,
And there is a certain coldness
creeping into the air.
Summer....where have you gone?

I stand alone,
Looking at the dark sky
A tree stands tall,
Outlined in darkness
Against the millions of stars
A voice calls out
"Em, time for bed!"
But I cannot end my last day of
freedom here.
The tree is inviting me to climb
Up, up, where I can sit and dream
About a perfect day
So I climb high
And dream that school doesn't start
For another week,
Another week of freedom.
"Em! Bed!" I hear again.
So, slowly, I climb down.
Get dressed and into bed.
Tomorrow I will not be free
Free for what seems eternity.
But I know, that one day,
I will be free once more.
