The sun rose high upon the sky, awaking the sleeping lovers. The wind was harsh upon their bare skin and the sky seemed cruel. The fields outside her window were dark, like they were rotting. D awoke and he could feel something wrong with the day. As if nature tried to warn him of something wrong.
"I have never witnessed a day, like this."D stated as he leaned against the window sill.
"Perhaps this day is one you will never forget and not for the reasons you believe it to be."hand said.
"Do not curse this day, today, I find happiness and live a life no longer alone but complete."
"Oh, so now I'm nothing to you."
"You could never be like she is to me."
"Perhaps, but don't count on her being there forever."
D allowed himself to be silent, for commenting back would be childish. He looked upon the horizon, calm and collectively, pondering what will life be like from this day. He stood there in almost a meditative state until, a warm hand touched his shoulder.
"A penny for your thoughts."
"Nothing to concern you about," D turned and kissed her cheek.
"If you want it that way, now then, I have to go and get ready, remember D we are not suppose to see each other till sunset, at that time we will marry in the reading room."
As she vanished, D began to think. He sat upon the wooden chair to his left and closed his eyes. He could picture himself, calm and serene with black veil covering him. From this point in his mind set he began to go over what Jonathan had said to him. Every detail of yesterday, from their conversation, to Genivieve's rage. The flash backs stopped and a second D appeared. they looked the same but the other one seemed taller and more knowledgeable. He appeared at the point when Jonathan had asked D the question of how Genivieve lived so long.
"Think, about that question and one other statement, he said that killing her wouldn't be healthy for him, then think about the simultaneous rage and scream Genivieve and Jonathan had last night."
"They share a life line."D said.
"The term soul mate often applied to lovers is actually a term for those who share a life line or in lay mens terms,"the second D quipped.
"A soul, so as long as she lives he does and vice versa."
"To destroy him you would have to sacrifice her."
"That is not a sacrifice for me to make."
"True, but you would have to let her go, she would have to do this, you don't have to tell her, but not telling her is selfish and unfair to both of you."
"No, to her, unless she knew and couldn't tell me."
"Perhaps, but then she would have anticipated her death, thus it would be illogical for her to fall in love with you or again vice versa."
"No one said women were logical."
"Again you speak the truth, perhaps she needed a vampire hunter for this but did not anticipate you or love."
"That seems more like it, yet she found me injured and healed me."
"Fate, when in doubt blame fate, you were fated to meet, perhaps this is a lesson in your young dhampire life you needed to learn. A lesson your father couldn't teach you, because he had to learn it the hard way once."the second D stood tall and silent.
"You're right, I have to resolve this, even if my heart will not let me lose her."
D awoke from his trance and as he gazed out the window he saw that sunset was almost upon them. He would have to hurry and either marry her or lose her.
D approached the reading room, it was lit with a hundred candles, he froze as he saw her in the center. Her deep red hair, was swept high and cascaded down, adorned in small red and white roses. Her lips were, painted red-violet and they had a sultry pout to them. An off the shoulder white silk and lace gown hung to her every curve. The sleeves flared at the wrists, looking like pseudo wings. The form fitting gown went down to the floor with a long slit on the right side. Her long creamy leg was exposed, reflecting the candles' glow. The mark upon her ankle was a golden dragon, wrapped around it. D held his breathe, as he never imagined her looking so beautiful as she did now. He carefully approached her, as if he was timid.
Genivieve gazed upon D his hair was pulled back. His tuxedo wore well upon him, the double breasted silk jacket, fitted his shoulders and was left unbuttoned. His dress pants were a straight cut, slightly draping over his shoes. His sword was seethed upon a holder on his golden cummerbund. He wore no tie just a white mandarin collar shirt, which the top two buttons were undone. He drew closer to her and took her hand.
"For everyone, there comes a point when we realize that man and woman need each other to become one...."
As the minister spoke, Jonathan began getting ready for the assault. He dressed in a black minister's shirt adorned with two silver shoulder pads. Her wore flowing black pants, and black boots. He held in his right hand a scythe, it was a mahogany handle and steel blade. The blade was curved and over two feet long, slightly crested with diamond chips allowing it to cut through almost anything. His pulled part of his hair back and left the majority down, he set his mental frame to the edge. He knew that this would be the day of victory or death, but he figured on victory, for D knew what was at stake. He jumped from his balcony and as her landed he appeared before D and Genivieve in place of the minister.
"I will always carry you within, for without you I am hollow, but now I am full."Genivieve had said to D.
"How touching."Jonathan said.
"You would, during our vows, destroy this precious day."she hissed at him. "So D, my friend did you figure out the secret, and did you tell her." "I know the secret but I did not tell her."D was ashamed. "Tell me what?" "That you and him share a soul, if you die he dies and vice versa."D had told her.
"You couldn't tell me because you didn't want to lose me?"
"I couldn't, I love you, my heart stopped me."D bowed his head before as if he was ashamed to be with her.
"Yes, so he would have to give you to me, because the other way would mean losing you all together. At least you would be alive and that would be easier on him."Jonathan added.
Genivieve drew closer to D. She picked his chin up as he had done for her and kissed him. She kissed him deeply as if it would be for the last time. As they embraced she took his sword out of the sheath. When they broke apart he realized what she had done, as he reached for her she vanished. Appearing in front of Jonathan, she put her arms around him.
"That's more like it,"Jonathan said, not noticing the sword in her hands or that she even took it from D.
"You're right I should be embracing you, giving you a final embrace,"Genivieve, kissed Jonathan and in one flowing movement, plunged D's sword through Jonathan's back. The blade tip peaked out of her back. Frozen they stood their as she let go of the hilt, Jonathan dropped his scythe and raised one hand to the sword blade they shared. They threw their heads back and without sound screamed their death. "Why?" Jonathan could barely ask. They fell apart, D flew to her catching her as she fell. Her blood ran all over D, as all he could do was look into her eyes.
"Why?"
"For, your cause, to rid the world of evil, great sacrifices must..."she began to cough up blood"be...."her hand reached up yo D's face,"made."
She closed her eyes and died in his arms. At that moment Jonathan screamed and died as well. His body flash burned leaving only his scorched scythe, D's sword, and a burn mark upon the stone floor. As D looked upon the remains of Jonathan the castle began to fade away. The solid stone walls became translucent as the candles no longer felt warm. In a sudden flash the castle began to trickle away, into tiny sparkles of light. The castle was not just her home but it was a part of her, made by her magic and held together by her heart. D sat there with his bride dead in his arms and a great evil dead a few feet away. Upon that bitter sweet moment D understood her love for him, his goal and that for the years to come, her death would not be senseless. Though with this understanding he still mourned, kissed her lips as a single tear fell upon her forehead. As he looked to the sky he held her closer for the moon was red and full. She began to fade away like her castle, D sat there trying to hold on to what mass she had left.
"Don't go...."D looked up and raised both hands into the air, trying to catch the sparkles.
The wind blew taking her further away from him, taking his sword he thrusted it into the ground, and kneeled before it.
"Great Being, of the heavens, watch my bride until I can be with her once again."D opened his eyes and walked away. Leaving the sword in the field as he walked to the horizon with a heavy heart and a new understanding of how important his quest is. Important enough to watch his love sacrifice her life because she believed in him.
D opened his eyes and looked to the horizon, he smiled to himself and somehow remembering that pain sharpens his mind and sets onward to fight a new evil. D stood up the wind upon his back, blowing his hair around his face. His cape waved forward mimicking the ocean in its waves around him. He gazed back to the direction he just came from, and thought of Doris. Though he cared for her, he couldn't love her, it would have been too hard on him. Yet, somewhere in his heart she would have a place, but his wife would always be his drive to sacrifice and pursue his goal.
"One day, we will be together again."he said, looking to the heavens.
