Asa Owings came from Baltimore county MD in the fall of 1795. He stopped with William Griffith for some time. to look for an improved farm, but not finding one to suit, he desired to return east to spend the winter. He had with him several thousand dollars in gold and silver, which he did not want to take back with him, as he expected to return in the spring and buy land. He and Griffith buried this money deep in the ground, under the hearth in Griffith’s cabin, where it lay till his return in the following May. He then purchased a tract of land south of Harmon’s creek, on the hill. He married in 1797, Mary Wells, daughter of Charles Wells near Buffalo creek, Brooke county, WV He and his wife lived on this farm during their life time. They raised a family of ten children, five sons and five daughters. The youngest child Rebecca, married Nathaniel Wells. Mr. Owings, died about 1819 and Mrs. Owings raised her family, saw them all married and settled in life. She died August 19, 1849 ages 62 years, eleven months and three days. Her youngest son, Charles W. Owings, now owns and occupies the old homestead.
