The HP-100s are monitoring headphones "designed for use primarily as an on-location monitoring device for live recording situations where monitor loudspeakers cannot be employed".
Hence they are closed back to provide some isolation from ambient sound, and a dynamic driver to provide the efficiency and the high acoustic power levels frequently required in on-site monitoring.
the acoustic response of the unit is tailored to be similar to that of a good quality monitor speaker, so that what you hear through the phones is representative of what your recording will sound like
over speakers. The drivers are 1 3/4 inches dia with a large 3/4 inch voice coil. The phones are rated to produce a 90dB SPL with a 1-mw input. At their rated max input power of 500mw, this works
out to an SPL of 117dB. We tried comparing the sound quality of the HP-100s with that of a good high quality speaker system. They were virtually identical, with only the subtlest variation.
If you're interested in phones that give a very exciting experience, you may not like the Nakamichi, but if you like good quality loudspeaker sound, give the Nakamichi set a listen.
