I was completely blown away the first time I saw the fightback play, they had tunes and energy and were obviously enjoying themselves a lot. Being one of the best bands in Scotland just now an interview was essential, so who is who in the fight back?
keano - vocals
douglas – guitar
mark - bass
just now, the lineup used to have glen on drums (we also have danny playing 2nd guitar for us till we find someone else)
Am I right that you've only been going since January?
ye we were a band before it but went through some line-up changes because we weren't getting anything done, but we got everything going again and played our first show april 8th.
what made you start
the band and where would you like to see it go?
douglas, mark and glen our old drummer had been playing in a different band for a while, they had songs but weren’t completely happy with their sound, at this point keano and danny were playing together in a different band, danny left this band to join 7 stone lighter. Keano then joined the fight back on vocals, it stayed that line up for a few months. We then thought about getting another guitarist to improve our sound, our first thought led us to Danny who is a good friend and would be able to learn the songs fast for a few shows. We seem to have a good thing going now and are looking forward to writing new songs and improving in general.
what do you guys do outside of the band and do other commitments ever clash
because you seem to be playing out a shed load these days and any plans for tours at all?
We are all at uni so it can get quite hard sometimes to find time and money to practice.
I’ve heard you might be doing an EP on IRN CRU, any truth in that?
Yeah we are, if everything goes to plan it’ll be done early next year. IRN CRU have been really supportive to us and have done as much as they can to help us out.
what label would you most like to see the fight back on and why?
In an ideal world we'd be on crucial response, bridge 9, indecision or dead and gone.
What was the first ever record you bought and do you still listen to it?
mark – blur - the great escape. He listens to it sometimes, pretty much for novelty purposes though (ha)
keano, douglas - oasis or some shit like that.. no.
a lot of shite really
What record got you into hardcore?
mark - minor threat: complete discography
douglas – Minor Threat : complete discography
keano - poison the well: the opposite of december
Do you consider hardcore to be a purely musical genre or do you view the political aspect to be integral part that defines hardcore from rock or pop?
we love the feeling of being part of something like hardcore, politics just seem to get in the way of a good time.
politics isn't something we go into, governmental or fashion and that sort of shit.
social politics do come into hardcore quite a lot and we delve into that a bit but we don't go as far as sampling or quoting noam chomsky, william blum etc.
we don't as a band who feel the need to preach to anyone about anything in particular, we just have a passion for playing our music and being able to get some kind of response from people.
we also see crowd participation as a big part of hardcore it makes the show far more enjoyable to see people taking part and enjoying themselves
whats your local scene like?
our local scene is pretty much non-existant, it used to be excellent "back in the day", then apathy set in and no one could be bothered going to gigs, quite recently a few guys started a weekly night putting on bands, no one took interest and it died fairly quickly.
any good bands people should be looking out for?
none from falkirk really and none that everyone doesn't already know, but bands like engage, divide, tearjerk, allergo, broken oath etc.
what do you think of the ukhc scene in general?
from where we see it the scene is good just now, theres a lot of really good bands like The Legacy, Fifty On Red, On Thin Ice and also What Hope Remains who we've had the pleasure of playing with.
what are your songs about?
all the lyrics are written by keano. he writes about things that are personal to him, they are mostly about getting dumped, drinking, partying, how hard it is and how girls are evil and of course skateboarding.....nah we don't have a clue what they are about, he's not very telling but they all have different themes in them....i like we let it slip the best, its pretty posi.
do you have any political agenda and who is
responsible for the lyrics, are there any topics that are out of bounds due to differing personal beliefs in the band?
there's no political agenda about writing lyrics we just let keano write them. since we don't touch on any touchy subject matter that may conflict with what we all believe in, it means there's no fuss. we're all pretty much on the same wavelength anyway so its doubtfull there'd be much we'd disagree on.
What three songs do you wish you had written and why?
left your mark - champion: this song sums up champion and has an amazing outro part.
the great divide - faded grey: we all love this song, the message in this song is pretty clear it's about how the scene can fall apart under peoples egos and how it takes work to make a scene good
too deep until now – chain of strength: excellent song and soon to be covered not so excellently ;)
Anything else you reckon the world should know about the fight back at the
moment?
O.E and F.J........that is all.
