Retired Numbers
On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees became the first player to have his jersey number retired. He was the first of 16 New York Yankees, and 140 other Major Leaguers.

Also, although he is only listed under the Dodgers, Jackie Robinson's #42 was retired by every major league club on April 15, 1997, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his breaking baseball's colour barrier.
