Golly Variations 1990.

The 1990 range has a few nice variations in designs in a basic set of 21. They also came in two different sets. One had a blank back and the other set has the Robertson's backstamp all over the back. There were no bubble coated brooches in this range.

Here are three different types of Tennis Player. The basic confusion with these is the difference between the sleeve ands and the sweat bands on the wrists. The sleeve ends are near the shoulders and the tennis player comes with : Both blue( right) , one blue one ( middle )  white and both white ( left )

This is a constant variation in the surfer. On his hand above the waves he has a blue hand. Colin Dodd's book lists this as an 'overpaint' but it was consistent for a batch of badges and is therefore a variation

This is a variation that is well known to most collectors. In most brooches since 1970 the eyes face to the Gollie's left, straight ahead or down. The astronaut brooch on the right of this picture shows the only Golly brooch in over 70 years that has eyes facing to the right. This difference seems to have been quite deliberate because the metal of the brooch is reversed but correct.

These 1990 baseball players are very similar except for one thing. It's not easily noticeable but the player on the right has a yellow heel on his boot. This is a specific section of enamel and this difference occurs in a few Baseball players. Makes it nice and rare for a tiny difference.

Nice little colour changes are what I like best and the 1990s policemen shown here are a good example of this. The shirts and ties are different colours on each one. The White shirt with blue tie is the common one but the blue shirt with white tie makes a nice diversion from this.

scot90.jpg (19289 bytes) The early 1990s Bagpipers I have are good examples of two different types of variation. It's obvious that the one on the left has a white sporran and bobble on his tam. The thing that makes the one on the right look so strange is that he has more  and thicker lines of metal. These are known as 'thick cut' brooches.

newstan.jpg (60376 bytes) A small variation in the Standards produced 1990 to 1998.

The one on the left was released with the 1996 range ( Eskimo etc ) . The one on the right was the standard for the 1990 range of 21. The main difference is the thickness of the metal around the figure. The main bit where it is noticeable is the Gollie's right hand. The amount of metal under each hand is very different ( well, if you look closely :-) )
