WIL CAN CHARM BUT HE CAN'T BITE |
|
7 April 2000, Herald Sun, Kate Herbert. How many more plays on Wil Anderson's name are still to come? Lost inthe Wil-derness; Ready, Wil-ing and Able; Wil-come to my Nightmare. Fortunately, he is funny as well as being committed to idiotic puns. Wil lopes on stage wearing a pinstriped jacket and a deceptive grin covering his cynical soul. The material is less acerbic and political than the previous show, Terra Wilius (pun!). He shoots barbed arrows at Eddie McGuire, then slams the show Popstars. He then gets mileage out of the audience, improvising around a woman weary of being a air-traffic controller and a young table-tennis coach. He takes shots at the GST on tampons and the political correctness of the Windsor Smith shoe poster. Anderson is
charming, but he seems hampered by his charm. If he stopped
wanting to be cute and loveable (no offence, Wil), he could
become a biting social commentator. |
