River Ridge Tech Ed students have been involved in the UW-Stout High Mileage Vehicle Challenge for the past two years and while we have been as successful on the track, progress has been made in areas of design.
Started in 1990, the UW-Stout HMV provides an excellent opportunity for students to brainstorm, problem-solve, and then produce a vehicle whose main task is get the highest mileage possible. Schools from all over Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota have ventured to Menomonie to try their luck at the HMV.
The HMV is divided into three components: 1)Proposal packet: this is a detailed document dispelling the team's problem solving process, including CAD drawings, sketches, and any other related material. 2) A Car show allows the students to judge each other's cars for original design, engine, drive train, etc. Last River Ridge was the only school to have two cars place in the top ten in the Car Show. 3) The challenge itself is pretty self explanatory. The vehicle must encircle over 3 miles with as little fuel consumed as possible. Last year's top vehicle finished around 520 mpg.
River Ridge has all but two people back from the last two years and we really look to make our presence felt this year. We know what it takes and have several teams already working on the cars. There is also exciting rumors floating that potentially this year's HMV could be moved to the State Capitol in Madison!!!! The media exposure plus the close proximity make this a potentially awesome opportunity for our students. More updates as they become available.
