My name is Maryann, I am a February child and my birthstone is the glowing purple/violet amethyst.
Amethysts are purple quartz. Saint Valentine whoes holiday we celebrate in February wore an amethyst. This stone was quite popular with the Romans and was equated the royalty. Cleopatra was said to have worn an amethyst signet ring and the Virgin Mary's wedding ring was said to be amethyst.
Catherine the Great of Russia had such a passion for amethysts that she instituted a nationwide search for the source - resulting in the great mines of the Ural Mountains, which for many years provided the world with the finest amethysts.
As a birthstone, it signifies sincerity. Amethysts are also believed to protect, enhance, and clean the home or work environment. Amethysts have the power of beauty.
