CUB OPPOSES ARROWHEAD TRANSMISSION LINE CALLS ARROWHEAD "UNACCEPTABLE"

The Citizens' Utility Board (CUB) today announced its strong opposition to the proposed Arrowhead transmission line, saying that it is an "unacceptable alternative" for addressing Wisconsin's energy needs and "should not be built." CUB's comments came with the filing today of its analysis of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the project.

"Wisconsin needs to make strategic investments in its energy infrastructure to meet growing demands for electricity. It is essential that the state make responsible investments. From virtually every perspective, the Arrowhead transmission line is clearly the wrong choice for Wisconsin," said Steve Hiniker, Executive Director of CUB.

"Arrowhead has something to offend nearly everybody. Arrowhead costs more than other feasible alternatives studied. Arrowhead disrupts more natural habitat than any of the alternatives. Arrowhead intrudes on more private property than all alternatives studied. Arrowhead requires substantially more new right of way than any of the alternatives. The DEIS shows very clearly that Arrowhead is wrong for Wisconsin and should not be built," said Hiniker.

"The Citizens' Utility Board recognizes the need for responsible investment in our electric generation and transmission system. We support fiscally responsible investments that do not unnecessarily disrupt landowners or the environment. The DEIS points in other directions for responsible investments for our energy needs."

"In light of alternatives that would cost less, impact fewer properties and be less devastating to the environment, we should put the Arrowhead proposal back on the shelf and pursue other alternatives immediately. By selecting the right infrastructure additions we can save money and improve reliability faster than waging a protracted battle to build the wrong project".

"While we will consider alternatives to Arrowhead, CUB emphatically rejects the notion that Arrowhead is worth the costs", concluded Hiniker.
