WOLF WATERSHED EDUCATIONAL PROJECT (WWEP)
RESOLUTION ON PROPOSED TRANSMISSION LINES
Keshena, Menominee Nation;
January 15, 2000
Whereas, many Wisconsin citizens are concerned about and/or directly affected
by a proposed 250-mile long, 345-kilovolt transmission line, proposed by Minnesota
Power and the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, which would cut a 250-foot-
wide path through many communities;
Whereas, many Wisconsin landowners/taxpayers, township and county governments,
and the Lac Courte Oreilles Chippewa Tribe have concerns with regard to negative
effects of transmission lines on our environment; as proposed routes run through
wetlands, forests, farm fields, etc.
Whereas, a 115-kilovolt feeder line is also proposed to run to the Venus substation,
near Monico, in order to provide electricity to the Crandon mine, which would have
detrimental environmental, economic, and cultural impacts on communities and the
natural environment on and around the Wolf River;
Whereas, electricity for the "Power-Up Wisconsin" proposal would come partially
from hydroelectric projects in northern Manitoba that have flooded the lands of the
Picilikimak Cree Nation at Cross Lake;
Whereas, at every step of the way--from the hydroelectric dams, to the transmission
line, to the Crandon mine--this power project has demonstrated disregard for the
rights of land-based peoples, including farmers and indigenous peoples, to continue
living on and gaining sustenance from their local environment;
Whereas, the project would not benefit the citizens anywhere in Wisconsin, as
electricity is freely sold between utilities, and transmission lines are not the only
or the best method of transporting energy;
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Wolf Watershed Educational Project
stands firmly and steadfastly in support of the efforts of the Save Our Unique Lands
(SOUL) group, and joins with transmission line opponents in protecting our
environment, rural culture, and democratic local control.
Further Be It Resolved, that the transmission line project is unnecessary for citizens
anywhere in Wisconsin, and it should not be built in anyone's backyard.
