Genealogy Help Page

Many who want to research their family tree don't know where to get started. The first place to begin is finding all the current info you have (i.e., family records, Bibles, certificates, letters, diaries, photos (many have writing on the back), obituaries, etc.).

Interview older relatives -- it's amazing what they remember or what documents they have to share (keep asking questions!).

Visit your local family history center! Check phone directory for the closest one (located at Later Day Saint church (Mormon) -- no, you don't have to be a member). Great resources there for free or small price to order.

Visit city, county state and national archives! Historical & genealogical societies, churches and cemetaries also! Anywhere records are stored!

There is more and more information being added to the internet, check out some of the sites below for help in getting started. Happy Hunting!

Be careful when climbing tree's, you never know which nuts might fall out.

More researching notes: (copied from an email list, sorry didn't copy the author's name)
Ask ALL of your older relatives to relate anything they can remember about the family. You will find that some of the stories of been "colored in" over the years to make them more exciting, but most have a small kernal of truth in there somewhere.
You need to work from "now" to "then," taking small steps. Perhaps your interviews with older relatives will give the the death dates and places of your grandparents. Then you can write to the county where they died and also where they were buried (if different) to find their obituaries. When researching obituaries, read each line separately and record any information you find. Many times, the brothers and sisters of the deceased person will be listed with their place of residence and you can trace them IF you are unable to trace your grandparents.

(Just put this page together quickly....copy & paste the links below to an email.)

This is probably the best resource for info on the web.
