You don't need a library beside your desktop to be in control of your operating system: one good book will do, maybe two.
We have carefully selected a few here, just the very best. All of them have "98" in the title, but the main parts of every book mentioned here, go for Windows 95 too. Read all about reinstalling, troubleshooting and customizing Windows in the highly recommended Windows 98 Resource Kit, one of the few Microsoft Press books that are really worth its price. A warning though: not even this book will explain to you what the function of every system file is or what those detailed error messages signify. But knowing as much about it as you can AND using your head can take you a long way. The Resource Kit is aimed at professionals and those who want to become experts, not for those who don't know how to use Windows. No other book is more revealing about how Windows 98 really works. Combined with the outstanding Windows 98 Registry Handbook, you're equipped to get in control almost completely. If you want to stay on a practical level, there are a number of comprehensive reference books available. The two that jump out are The Windows 98 Bible and Special Edition Using Windows 98, with a slight advantage for the Bible, but you can't go wrong with either one.
If you don't feel very comfortable with Windows and at the same time don't want to get too profound, you can start from scratch and go for the intermediate level with the ABC's of Windows 98, an excellent and straightforward guide that doesn't need silly jokes to make it readable. Jokes are the trademark of the Dummies series, and like 'm or not, Windows 98 for Dummies and its sequel, More Windows 98 for Dummies 2, probably won't let you down. |
