July 12, 2001: The Marantz arrived at 2:15 today. It took me forever to open the box but eventually got the Marantz out. It was a little dirty and one of the knobs was bent. I just shrugged it off and thought I would clean it later and that the knob was no big deal. I hauled it down to my room and boy was it heavy (49.5 pounds to be exact). I hooked it up and fired it up. It did not sound quite right so I messed with the settings. After some listening and tweaking it still did not sound very good even compared to my little 800. The volume knob was also in a weird position, but my dad fixed that easily. Now that I have listened for awhile, it does not sound too bad. Just needs a cleaning on the inside. I rubbed the face with a wet paper towel and I realized how dirty it was. I forgot to mention that the Marantz sounds like it was in a tavern all of its life. I will have to e-mail the seller and see what the deal is. Anyways, only other problems are two burnt out bulbs behind the tuner (not very noticeable, but there are two dim spots) and a burnt out FM light. Easy fixes. I am just going to let it run for awhile tonight and I will worry about cleaning when I get back from Kenosha. I am leaving to go there tomorrow for a housewarming that I am in charge of the music at. I wanted to do the whole DJ thing, but it looks like that will be a little too much. I might just bring the Marantz and a CD player. That way I can just have the radio on and if someone wants to play a CD they can. Anything else? Put the Sansui by the computer and have it driving the Jensen 6 x 9s. Sounds pretty decent. That little 800 has ten times better sound reproduction than the Marantz, but it might be a different story once the Marantz is cleaned. I might have tech look at it too because there is a lot of hiss when whoever is singing the vocals on a song makes the S sound. That is all for now!
