Study writing with Robert Chappell

And never leave home.

Despite what many aspiring poets and writers are told, poetry is not an inspiration by bolt of lightning. The great William Wordsworth did in fact write that all good poetry is "the spontaneous overflow of powerful emotion." He goes on, however, to say that it can only be undertaken by one who has "thought long and deeply." That means it's important to have natural talent and inspiration, but an aspiring poet must cultivate that talent with careful study of the poetry of the past and present, and guidance from an accomplished mentor. Even the best writers benefit from some assistance, even if it's just a fresh set of eyes looking over a new work.
