Gadgets

Snake's other armaments and accessories are mostly as in MGS, so far. His binoculars let him spy on enemies from far off. Chaff and stun grenades can be found and used in the demo, to fool electronics and temporarily knock out enemies. Snake can also use his empty magazines to create diversions if necessary. In the first trailer movie, he tosses a clip one way to send a guard off to investigate the noise, then quickly runs past him while his back is turned.

Available in the demo, although only noticeable if you go through your inventory, is a vibrating proximity sensor. In another use of the Dual Shock controller's vibration feature such as the original MGS was famous for, you'll feel a vibration if an enemy draws near while you have this equipped. It's not particularly useful when your radar is active, but it can save you if you use it while you're in evasion mode or you've popped off a chaff grenade.

As promised in Kojima's early presentations, MGS2 does indeed feature many cardboard boxes. The demo includes two -- a rain-soaked one that won't be noticed outside, and a dry one that you can hide under once you make it to an indoor environment. The box is still a bit of a novelty, rather than a serious tool for avoiding the enemy, but it's still a laugh riot to watch the guards' puzzled reactions to the box, or to trot around in first-person view mode looking out through the little handles. As a fun Easter egg, furthermore, the box can actually get shot up and lose pieces here and there when the guards open fire on Snake while he's inside it.

If Snake finds himself missing a few too many pieces, the "bandage" item can stop him from bleeding -- that's important, because not only will Snake gradually lose health when he's severely wounded, he'll leave a blood trail that the guards can follow. Bandages will stabilize his health and let him get away more easily. To actually increase his health, you use rations as before.
