The Cox Family of Upshur County, Texas

The Cox-Bentley Researchers here in Upshur County,
Texas are inclined to believe that our Cox's started in
Virginia, moved to South Carolina, then moved to
Alabama, and finally to East Texas. I will start
with JOHN COX who left a will proven on
9 Aug 1816,Pendleton District, South Carolina.
John married SARAH SMITH about 1782, South
Carolina and had 14 children.
I will list them in the order given in his will:


CHILDREN OF JOHN AND SARAH COX:

1- WILLIAM COX born about 1783, married a
NANCY, and died about 1827 in South Carolina.

2- ELIZABETH COX born about 1785, married
JONATHAN SKELTON 7 July 1810, Elbert Co.,
Georgia. He is believed to be the son of Robert
Skelton and Elizabeth Bobo of South Carolina.
Robert Skelton Sr. was a Revolutionary War Soldier
and served for 156 days duty as Horseman in Capt.
Moses Wood's Company, Col. Brandon's Regiment, in
1780. He served under Col. Roebuck in Brandon's
Regulars following the fall of Charleston in 1781.
For Militia duty in 1782 he was paid 22 Pounds, 5
Shillings, 8 pence half penny, 17 Mar 1788.
Land in Georgia was given by Bounty Grants to
Veterans of the Revolutionary War, so this would
explain the Skelton's move to Georgia. They had 7
children.

3- NED (EDWARD)COX born about 1795, Pendelton
District, S.C.; married FRANCES ? about 1814, S.C.,
died about 1841, Blount Co., Ala.; Frances is believed
to have died about 1855, Blount Co., Ala. We have
found no trace of her after the 1850 census.
Many researchers have stated that she was a
Tidmore, but those of us in Upshur County have
not seen any proof of this, nor do we know the
source for this informaion.
We do believe they had 10 children.

4- JOHN COX born about 1784, S.C.

5- JAMES COX born about 1788, S.C.

6- NAOMI COX born about 1800, S.C., said
to have married JOHN McDONALD.

7- CASIAH COX born about 1799, S.C., said to
to have married DANIEL KELLY.

8- DELILAH COX born around 1801, S.C. and
married JEREMIAH SHELTON.

9- SARAH COX born around 1803, S.C. and
married CHARLES CAUTHAN.

10- TILMAN COX born around 1804, S.C. and
married #1- SARAH 'SALLY' Unknown,
#2- CLARISSA EMILY HAYS 1859, Fannin Co., Georgia

11- AZARIAH COX

12- ISRAEL 'RIAL' COX born 13 April 1809, S.C.
He married ELIZABETH HUDGENS, 6 March 1836, Jackson
Co., Alabama. He was found in Wood Co. Tx., 1860

13- HIRAM PERRY COX born 15 January 1805, S.C., he
died 24 Feb 1894 in Alabama. Hiram married FRANCES
'Polly' POOLE about 1826, S.C. and moved to
Jefferson Co., Ala. They had 9 children.

14-ALLEY [ALICE] ELENOR COX, born about 1812, S.C.
married JACK 'JOHN' PARSONS, who died in 1868, Ala.

born 1815, Pendleton District, South Carolina
He is believed to have died about 1898/99 and is
buried at Shady Grove Cem.,Upshur County, Texas.

T.L. had a total of 22 children.


2. CATHERINE COX born 1816,Pendleton Dist., S.C.
Catherine married William S. Skelton (1810-1888)
4 Feb 1835, Blount Co., Alabama. 15 children
were born to this marriage.


3. SARAH ANN COX born 1817,Pendleton Dist., S.C.
Sarah married WILLIAM L.RENEAU 18 NOV 1841 in
Blount Co., Alabama. 8 children were born to
this marriage.


4. WILLIAM L. COX born 1818, Pendleton Dist., S.C.


5. DELILAH COX born 1820, Pendleton Dist., S.C.
married ANDREW ALLRED 21 March 1843,
Blount Co., Alabama. Delilah was the 3rd wife
of ALLRED, and had 4 children by him.


6. JOHN COX born 1824, Pendleton Dist., S.C.
He married ELIZA E. UNKNOWN in 1846 Alabama.
John and Eliza had 2 daughters.


7. GREENBURY COX born 1826, Anderson Co., S.C.
married:
1)MANERVA PANNELL who bore a set of
twin boys in 1844, and she died.
2)ABIGAIL JONES 1846, Blount Co., Ala.
Greenbury and Abigail had 6 children.


8. CAROLINE COX born 1828. Married a Mr. Scott


9. JAMES ISREAL COX born 3 Sep 1836 S.C.
married:
EDNIE BENTLEY 15 Mar 1851, Alabama, daughter of
TURNER BENTLEY (brother of our Lucinda) and MARY
JANE BRANDON. James died 15 Mar 1918, Blount Co.,
Alabama. They had 4 children.


10. FRANCES 'FANNY' J.COX born 1840, Alabama
and married 30 Oct 1856, Blount Co., Alabama to
THOMAS JEFFERSON HOLT and had 11 children.
T.J. died 18 Apr 1911, Montgomery, Alabama.
Fanny died about 1927.


Children of T.L. and Lucinda Cox were:
Proven by the Bible Lucinda brought with her
from Alabama. The Bible is believed to have originally
belonged to her mother, MARY 'POLLY' WHITLOCK LONG.

1. ASBERRY GARRISON COX: born 27 Nov 1836, Blount
County, Alabama. Died 22 Mar 1919 Oil City,
Caddo Co., La. He is buried in New Hope Cem.,
Upshur Co., Texas.
He married:


OLEVIA GAGE (1840-1874) 7 Oct 1858,Upshur
Co.,Texas and had 6 children.


SUSAN JANE MCINTOSH (1848-1929)
27 Jan 1876,Upshur Co.,Tx. and had 3 children.


2. COLUMBUS N.COX: born 4 Feb 1838,Blount Co.,Ala.
Married Valeria/Selena Unknown about 1848,Texas
They had 1 son, JOHN H. COX born 1859, Wood Co.,
Texas.This is all I have found on him other than
the 1860 census of Wood County.

So although there is no record of his death in
the Civil War, I assume that is what happened.
His wife must have remarried, but what happened
to John H.?


3. WILLIAM MARION COX: born 10 Mar 1839,Blount Co.,
Alabama. Died 30 Mar 1863 at Camp Douglas, Ill
as a prisoner of war. He was in Co. 1, 18th
Texas Cavalry, enlisted 1 Mar 1862.William was
captured in Arkansas, 11 Jan 1863 and taken to
Camp Douglas(Chicago)where he died of enteritis.


4. SIDNEY RIGS COX: born 20 Sep 1840,Blount Co.,Ala.
Enlisted 1 Dec 1861 in Co.D,10th Regiment,Texas
Cavalry. Died of a thigh wound & gangrene 25 Aug
1864 Ocmulgee Hospital Macon,Georgia.


5. IRA McMILLIAN COX: born 15 May 1842,Blount Co.,
Ala. He enlisted in Co.G., 17th Texas Cavalry on
1 Mar 1862. He was captured on 11 Jan 1863, and
taken to Camp Douglas,Ill., where he died.


6. MARY FRANCES COX: born 25 Sep 1843,Blount County,
Ala. Died:7 Jul 1927, Upshur Co., Tx.,buried at
New Hope Cem., Upshur Co., Tx. She married:

#1-HENRY H. GAGE, 29 April 1858, Upshur Co.,Tx.
He was born about 1835 in Alabama, and died 1864 at
Ft.Smith, Arkansas as a Confederate.
Henry and Mary Frances had 2 children:

I - MALFANETTE 'Nettie'GAGE, who married
GEORGE WASHINGTON BALLARD 6 Jan 1882

II - HENRY ASBURY (BUD)GAGE, who married
MARTHA LOWAY 1885.


#2-DANIEL WILSON STANLEY, 3 Jan 1866,Upshur Co.,
Texas. He was born 3 Feb 1846,Arkansas and died
13 Sep 1932,Upshur Co.,Texas. He is buried in New
Hope Cem., Upshur Co., Texas.
D.W. and Mary F. had 11 children.


7. JOHN WATSON COX: born 26 May 1845,Blount Co.,Ala.
The only thing I have found that could possibly
be him is this: Company "F" Blount County Tiger
Boys, 29th Alabama Infantry Privates:Cox, John W.


8. LOUIS IBZAN COX: born 20 Jun 1846,Blount Co.,Ala.
He died 15 Oct 1932 in Eastland Co., Tx. and is
buried in Rising Star Cem., Eastland Co., Tx.
He married MATTIE ELLEN ELDER 17 Sept 1871,
Upshur Co., Texas. We would like very much to
find any descendents of this couple.


9. MIRIAME ELVIRA COX: born 1 Feb 1848,Blount County
Ala. She died 2 Jan 1931,Upshur Co., Tx. and is
buried in Hoover Cem.,Upshur Co.,Tx. She married

#1- Mr. Dubose and they had 1 daughter:
ISABELLE L. DUBOSE, born about 1870.

#2- GASAWAY(GAD)GAGE, born 12 Apr 1831, Alabama
This was the 2nd marriage for the both of
them. They had 3 children.


10. SARAH ADALINE COX:born 30 Apr 1849,Blount Co.
Alabama. She died before 1850, Alabama.


11. ELIZA JANE COX: born 12 May 1850,Blount Co.,
Ala. Died 6 Oct 1862, Upshur Co., Texas.


12. LUCINDA CAROLINE COX: born 18 Nov 1851, Blount
County, Alabama. Died 5 Oct 1919 Van Zandt Co.,
Texas, buried Rocky Point Cem.,Wills Point,Texas
Married JOHN KING RUSHING about 1871, in Texas
They had at least 3 children we know of.


13. TEXAS ANN COX: born 30 Mar 1853,Blount County
Texas. She died 1 Feb 1939 Van Zandt Co., Tx.
She is buried in Rocky Point Cem., Van Zandt
Co.,Tx. She married ALEXANDER WINFIELD McINTOSH
1 Dec 1872,Upshur Co.,Texas, and had 5 children.


14. HENRY ASBURY COX: born 3 May 1855,Blount Co.
Alabama. He died 31 Mar 1938.


15. MELISSA COX: born 27 Sep 1856,Upshur Co., Tx.
and believed to have died young.


16. UPTON ASA WRIGHT COX: born 21 Apr 1857, Upshur
County, Texas. Died 5 Feb 1940 Upshur Co., Tx.
Buried New Hope Cem., Upshur Co.,Tx. He married
CLARISSIA 'TESS' GAGE 7 Jan 1879, Upshur Co.,
Texas. Clarissia was born 3 Nov 1861,Upshur Co.
Texas, the daughter of GASAWAY GAGE and RHONDA
JANE HOOVER. Clarissa died 12 Apr 1922,Upshur
County, Tx., and is buried in New Hope Cem.,
Upshur Co.,Tx. Upton and Clarissia had 10
children and are the great grandparents of my
husband.


17. SABRINA/SALINA COX: born 20 Sep 1858,Upshur
County, Texas. (Her name is hard to read in
Lucinda's bible.)




T.L. COX married for the 2nd time to:

Upshur Co.,Tx. and had 3 more children.

1) CONRAD BEAUREGARD COX: born 26 Jul 1861
Upshur Co.,Tx. He died 12 Aug 1863

2) ADA TRESS COX: born 15 Oct 1862,Upshur
Co.,Tx. Nothing else is known about her.

3) SAMUEL LEE COX: born 1866, and married
LOIS TILLMAN 20 May 1883, Upshur Co.,
Texas. She was the daughter of GREENBURY
TILLMAN and ADELINE UNDERWOOD.

BEAVERS) about 1870, they had 2 children

TILLMAN the son of GREENBURY TILLMAN
and ADELINE UNDERWOOD.

2) MATTIE ELVIRA COX: born 1873,Upshur
Co.,Tx., she died 1879 Upshur Co.,Tx.

2-ROBERT McMILLIAN 'MACK' COX born 25 June 1862,
Upshur Co., Texas. He died 10 Jan 1882, Upshur
Co., Texas and is buried in New Hope Cemetary.

died befoe 1880.

4-MALINDA COX born March 1865, Upshur Co., Tx.

(Mollie) McIntosh 16 June 1886 Upshur Co., Texas.

6-SALLIE COX born 10 April 1872, she died on
16 March 1931, and is buried in Pleasant Hill Cem.
She married WILLIAM ROBERT MATHIS on 26 Nov 1886.

3-LEILA BELL COX born 26 Jan 1884, died in
Vivian, Caddo Parish, Louisiana 3 Nov 1919.
She married SAMUEL MADISON PANKEY 5 Nov 1904.
[Isaac and Samuel were the sons of William Auzy
Pankey and Sarah Frances Hearn]

4 Jun 1872, Upshur County, Texas.

5-SARAH LUCINDA STANLEY born 15 Feb 1873 and
died 26 Nov 1960. She married WILLIAM W. MABERRY

6-NANCY CAROLINE STANLEY born 21 Dec 1875
and died 18 May 1940. She married ROBERT STEGALL

7-JULIE ANN STANLEY born 23 Sep 1877 and died
11 May 1964. She married JOHN V. GOINS 9 Dec 1897

8-DANIEL MARTIN STANLEY born 24 Jul 1879 and
died 20 Oct 1959. He married GERTRUDE DUDLEY.

9-JOHN LARKIN STANLEY born 2 May 1881 and
died 2 Apr 1963. He married LUNIE ESTER WYATT on
7 May 1907, Upshur Co., Texas. Family members
have told me that they lived about 1/2 mile down
the road from where I now live.

10-ALICE OLIVIA LAVADA STANLEY born 11 Feb 1883,
she died 18 Feb 1970. She married ALVIN BARNES
ROBERTSON 7 May 1907, Upshur Co., Texas.

11-OWEN LEVI STANLEY born 4 Dec 1885 and died
1918. He married NELLIE MASON.

married J. CASLET 9 Dec 1884, Upshur Co., Tx.

Clarissia was the daughter of GASAWAY 'GAD' GAGE and
RHONDA JANE 'SINDY' HOOVER. Gad Gage was the son of
BENJAMIN GAGE and ELIZABETH HARRELL, Sindy was
the daughter of ABRAHAM HOOVER and NANCY ROBINSON.

1-EZRA COX born 11 Oct 1879, died 15 Oct 1966.
He married WILLIE LEE HAYES on 16 Feb 1908.
Ezra and Willie had 1 son and 4 daughters:

CLARA ESTELLE born 13 Jan 1909 and married
FLOYD HARRISON 10 Aug 1927.

EARNEST ODELL born 26 Sep 1911, believed
to have married VIRGIE MAE SPENCER.

EDITH MAE born 1914, and married WILTON

LOVELLE OLETA born 1918, and married
