JONES' FAMILY REMEMBERS HER ABDUCTION A YEAR LATER Published September 5, 1995 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) Associated Press Town of Parfreyville- A rural road will serve as the site of a memorial service Tuesday marking the first anniversary of the abduction and murder of 12-year-old Cora Jones. The child's family will place a memorial marker at the abduction site, not far from a bridge over the Crystal River where Cora loved to fish and swim. She disappeared while bicycling near her grandmother's Waupaca County home. "It'll have her picture on it," said Vicki Jones, Cora's mother. "We want to remind everyone what happened." A manual detailing search techniques for missing children will be introduced at Tuesday's service, she said. It was written with the help of Jay Breyer, whose 2-year-old niece was murdered in 1991 in the Town of Menasha. "We sure could have used something like that last year," Jones said. "You hope no one will ever have to use it... but that's not likely these days." Jones credits her husband, Rick, family and church with helping her cope with the tragedy of her daughter's murder. "We were in such a state of shock," she said. Cora's body was found six days after her disappearance in Langlade County. She was the last murder victim of serial killer David F. Spanbauer. Spanbauer was arrested two months later as he burglarized a home in Combined Locks. He confessed to killing Cora, 10-year-old Ronelle Eichstedt of the Town of Ripon, and 21-year-old Trudi Jeschke of Appleton. Spanbauer is serving three life sentences plus 403 years in prison. In addition to the memorial service Tuesday on Sanders Road in the Town of Parfreyville, there also will be a Sunday community gathering at Waupaca's Trinity Lutheran Church to remember all the victims. |
