We hugged and he grasped my hand as he pulled away, holding my gaze. We both wanted more, but not in public. It was something to hold on to for next time.

 

“I’ll call you,” he said, and winked.

 

I watched him disappear, the ache growing inside. When he was gone I headed for the car park.

 

My phone rang. It was him. I was still in the airport, and he was still on the runway.

 

“Told you I’d call.”

 

“How was your flight?”

 

“Uneventful.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I love you.”

 

I laughed. “I love you too.”
