I could go, pretend I’ve gone.

I could show a strength I’ve never shown.

But you know me,

I will lose my balance...

The Hummingbirds

The phone rang and dragged him out of a drunken dream.

“Hello?”

“Dom, it’s Billy.”

“Yeah.”

“You okay mate?”

Dom rubbed his eyes. “Yeah, I was asleep.”

“Sorry.”

“’S okay.” He needed a hug. He needed something. He sighed and his hands shook.

“What’s happened, Dom?”

“Elijah’s gone.”

“Yeah, I got that much from your message. When’s he coming home?”

“I don’t know.” Dom made a soft, frightened sound. “Billy…”

“I’m on my way.”

He dropped the phone to the floor and went back to sleep.

The insistent knocking on the door jerked him awake. He rolled off the sofa and his head screamed at him. He staggered to the door and when he opened it Billy was standing there with worried eyes. By the time he closed the door Billy’s arms were around him, holding on tight.

“He’s gone,” Dom sighed into his neck. He let go of everything he’d been hanging on to since yesterday morning and sobbed, shaking in Billy’s arms.

“Okay, it’s okay…I’m here, mate…” Billy held him gently.

When Dom calmed down a little Billy let him go and led him to the sofa. He rubbed Dom’s back and Dom sat there with his head in his hands, not looking up.

“I’m sorry. I almost didn’t call you, but I needed to. I didn’t want to call anyone else.”

Billy’s hand slowed slightly on Dom’s back. “Why wouldn’t you call me?”

“I just…I feel so…embarrassed.” Dom sniffed and wiped his eyes on his t-shirt.

“Embarrassed? Why?”

“Because I know what everyone’s saying,” murmured Dom, still not looking up. “They’re saying I’m stupid for staying with him, for forgiving him.”

Billy didn’t say anything and Dom finally looked at him, smiling.

“I know that’s what people have been saying. You all think I’m a glutton for punishment. Maybe I am, but I can’t help it.”

“It doesn’t mean we’d turn our backs on you if you needed us. It’s only cos…cos we love you that we care so much.”

Dom let his head fall against Billy’s shoulder.

“Anyway, now he’s left you. None of us saw that coming.”

“I virtually broke it off. I told him if he went to Viggo’s I wouldn’t be here when he came back.”

Billy swallowed. “So…oh I’m sorry, Sblomie.”

“I basically fucking told him it's over.”

“What did he say?”

“I don’t think he believed me,” Dom laughed nervously, not wanting to believe it himself. “He kept saying we need a break.”

“Well, he’s probably right, you know. Might be good for you both.”

“Billy, you know what he’s like. I know what he’s like. Every time we’re apart he fucks around.”

“Maybe this is different.”

Dom laughed again, tinged with bitterness. “That’s what he said.”

“Look, I’m not going to tell you what to do, but it’s obvious you two don’t talk to each other enough. You get mad and you stay mad. You’ve got to let go of things like that. You’ve got to let it go otherwise you just feed each other’s anger and everything goes to hell.”

Dom nodded. “Yeah. That’s exactly it.”

They sat in silence for a moment.

Dom sighed. “He said he’d call, but…shit!” He leapt off the sofa towards the answering machine.

“What?”

“Message!” He pressed the playback button.

“How could you not know there was a bloody message?”

“Sshh!”

He sat staring silently at the answering machine when it finished.

“Do you know,” he said quietly. “That’s the first time he’s said he loves me for…for fucking weeks. Months. And he says it on a fucking answering machine message.”

Billy thought for a moment. “When was the last time you said it to him?”

Dom sighed and closed his eyes. “Yeah, okay.”

He sat back on the sofa beside Billy.

Billy was looking at him sternly, that big brother look he sometimes got. “It goes both ways, Dommie. You both talk about how bad the other is, but it’s both of you, isn’t it?”

Dom wouldn’t look at him.

“I’m only saying this because you’re my friend, okay? You’ve both got to talk to each other and you’ve both got some apologising and forgiving to do.”

“Oh, stop being so fucking sensible.” Dom pulled him closer and kissed the side of his head. “I know you’re right. You always are. That’s why I called you.”

“Yeah,” Billy grumbled. “Anyway, I thought you were here yesterday. How did you manage to not answer the phone and not know there was a bloody message? Are you turning into a deaf old man?”

Dom managed a laugh. “No, I was here but…I was in the house for a while, talking to Deborah, and then…I came back around six and just got drunk.”

Billy nodded knowingly. “Oh, right. In other words you drank until you passed out, which probably means you didn’t hear the phone.”

“Shut up,” mumbled Dom.

He dialled Elijah’s mobile number. He listened for a moment and then his eyes widened. “Fuck.”

“What?”

“Can’t reach his mobile. Fucking Idaho.” He flicked through his address book, which lived permanently by the phone and was as scruffy looking as he currently was. He sighed at it and tossed it onto the coffee table.

“I’ve only got Viggo’s number here in LA.” He looked at Billy.

“I haven’t got it.”

“Who would?”

“Does Lij have his own address book?”

Dom shook his head. “No, he programs numbers straight into his phone.”

“Call directory assistance,” said Billy calmly. “And then tell me exactly when we decided I had to do all the thinking.”

Dom smiled and dialled the number. After spelling Viggo’s name he argued with the operator, who wouldn’t give him the number because it was a silent listing.

He growled and tossed the phone across the floor, then got up and proceeded to pace angrily back and forth like a caged animal.

“Who’d have his fucking number?”

“Just calm down, Dom, it’ll be okay. He’ll probably call again.”

“He’ll think I’ve left and…and…and fuck knows what’ll happen!”

“Well this isn’t going to help.”

Dom stopped and stared at him pathetically. “Why did he go in the first place? Why?”

“Sblomie…”

“Why did we let everything get so fucked up?”

“Maybe he’s realised something has to be done about this. Admit it Dom, it’s not exactly heaven, is it?”

“No…but…I…I never thought he would be the one to leave. He always comes back home, and I’m the one who says ‘if this happens again, I’m going’. That’s where we are, that’s how it is. That’s why…why we’ve just let it go on like this for so fucking long.”

“You both knew your roles.”

“Yes.”

“And now he’s improvising.”

“Yes! And I don’t know what to do. Part of me wants to stay and part of me has just fucking had enough.”

Billy shook his head, frustrated. Sometimes he wanted to slap both of them.

“If you’re not sure why the fuck did you tell him it’s over?”

Dom just waved a hand, sighing in frustration. “I don’t know. I don’t know!”

He resumed his pacing and Billy moved into his path and stopped him, taking Dom’s head in his hands and forcing him to listen.

“Dom, listen to me, okay? It’s time for you to decide what you want once and for all.”

Billy rubbed his shoulder while Dom clutched at his shirt.

“I don’t know, I just…I want to…,” Dom bit his lip. “I want to just drag him home and…and just fucking hold him for weeks and not let him go. He makes me so fucking angry, but all I’ve been able to think about since yesterday is how it will be without him, and I think that’s worse.”

“You’ve never actually thought about that?”

“No…I never really had to. Leaving was always up to me, now he’s gone and done it.”

Dom’s shoulders slumped and he just stood there, close to tears again. Billy pulled him into his arms. “What am I going to do with you two,” he murmured softly. “I should just bloody shoot the both of you. You’re driving me insane.”

“I know,” came the muffled response from his shoulder. “I’m sorry.”

“Well I should bloody hope so.”

Billy gently pushed Dom back a little, brushing the tears from his face. He swallowed and felt his own eyes fill with tears. “I worry about you both and I don’t know what to do. Do you have any idea how hard it is watching you two and the way you’re going? Watching you hurt each other?”

Dom sniffed, and smiled. “Dunno what I’d do without you.”

“Well, I’m not the only one, either.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. Me, Orli, Sean, Viggo. You’ve got us all worried. So don’t worry too much about Viggo, okay? He’ll be doing what I’m doing now.”

“Yeah, but…you haven’t got the hots for me. If he thinks it’s over, he might do something.”

Billy sighed. He didn’t have an answer for that.

He hugged Dom again until he calmed down. When they let each other go Dom kissed him gently on the lips. Billy sighed and smiled, and then softly, gently kissed him in response, stroking his face.

“And that’s all you’re getting from me, Sblomie,” he said with a grin, sliding his hand down the side of Dom’s neck and gently scratching the back of his head.

“Yeah, I know,” Dom managed a small laugh. “I love you.”

“Love you too, although sometimes I wonder why.”

He ruffled Dom’s hair affectionately then put his arm around him, steering him to kitchen to get him a glass of water.

“I’ll do anything to help you, okay? Whatever you decide.”

Dom nodded, taking the glass gratefully. He drank half it with Billy watching him intently. Finally he drained the glass and looked up, that sad smile on his face again.

“Billy,” he said quietly. “I think I’ve made a mistake.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“I should kill you right now,” Billy said, shaking his head.

Dom nodded. “I know.”

“So,” Billy said. “You want him back.”

“I think so.”

“Think so,” said Billy grimly.

“Yeah.”

“Do…do you think that’s a good idea?”

Dom shrugged. “Can’t think of a better one.”

Billy thought for a moment. “Well then,” he said finally. “Let’s go get him.”

They fought over who was going to drive and Billy won. He didn’t have a hangover and Dom did, so Dom wasn’t in the mood for arguing. Unfortunately they were making it up as they went along, and now they were sitting in the car feeling very, very foolish.

“Where the fuck is Idaho?”

“Oh, it’s…” Billy waved a hand vaguely. “North-east. Ish. I think.”

Dom looked at him. “How far is it?”

Billy shook his head thoughtfully, sighing. “Um…well it’s only up and across one…on the map…”

Dom frowned. “That’s not very helpful.”

“It’s the best I can do at short notice.”

They sat in silence for a few moments.

“I just had a thought,” said Billy.

“Uh oh.”

“Shut it. Where exactly in Idaho is Viggo?”

Dom sighed. “Fuck.”

“Okay, this is what we do: we call the gallery, and we get his phone number off them, and we call him again.”

Dom bit his lip. “Okay.”

They went back into the house. Five unsuccessful minutes later the only thing Track 16 could give them was Viggo’s address and phone in LA.

Dom sank onto the sofa beside Billy, breathing shallow like he was about to panic.

“Fuck,” he said softly.

“Yeah, that’s one way of putting it.” Billy tossed the phone book onto the coffee table where it made a loud satisfying thud. Dom put his head in his hands and started to cry again.

“I just want him to come home.”
