The Duergar - Gray Dwarves |
|
Duergar: The Duergar race was born out of slavery. The Illithids of the Underdark enslaved entire civilizations, and Clan Duergar was one. Known as Deep Dwarves, or Grey Dwarves, the Duergar are a wicked sub-race of dwarves known to the Underdark. A whole Clan of Dwarves was taken by the Illithid, and through the centuries of slavery and experimentation by the Illithids, the Duergar sub-race emerged. This slavery bred a great deal of hate and evil into them. They are a evil and bitter race, but have retained the superior skill and workmanship of the dwarvenkind. They have found a niche for themselves in the Underdark, creating armor and weapons to trade with the warring races of that realm. Their anger and strength drives them to be powerful warriors, and they shun and fear magic with a passion. Physical Characteristics: Duergar have greyish skin, not really dark, but dull. They have gray hair and are almost always bald. Those that do grow hair, shave it. They covet a long beard, like their dwarvenkin. |
Clan DeepEye: Unlike the other branches of the Duergar that freed themselves from Illithid control, Clan DeepEye remained for generations longer, under the control of the Mind Flayers. At the time, they had not yet taken the name 'DeepEye', but another lost Clan name. The Duergar of Clan DeepEye owe their freedom to the mighty Gazer, Gorgoraath. The powerful Gazer attacked and freed the Clan, and they credit him for their freedom. Consequently, the Gazer kept the Clan in slavery, although, the Duergar would scoff at such notions. In honor of the Gazer, the Clan changed their name to reflect the Eye tyrant. Clan DeepEye toiled under Gorgoraath for several generations, until, unknown to the Duergar, Clan DeepEye was sold to Qu'ellar Myrdaruk. To the Duergar, the Drow are seen as wicked slavers, but the Deep-Eye would dissaprove of revolt. It is unknown where Gorgoraath is, currently. Rumours speak of the creature traveling the planes. They revere the Gazer as a diety, having forsaken the traditional Duergar god. |
Creating your Duergar: Grey Dwarves have dull grayish skin, with grey beards. They are almost always bald, and those that are not usually shave. Mohawks are another option for Duergar. They have long beards, and moustaches. All Duergar must have the last name -Deep-Eye- after their first name. Straying from this will mean your character will not be accepted into Qu'ellar Myrdaruk. Some examples of first names: Gramgi, Olon, Haroom, Thoror, Gimak, Morak. An example of a complete name would be, Balar Deep-Eye. The Duergar slaves of Qu'ellar Myrdaruk are almost exclusively kept as battle fodder. As such, they are fierce warriors and trained in powerful weapons. They are fierce armsmen, favoring mace weapons above all others. Often they will train with shields as well. They are restricted leather armor, as well as plate legs. However, they are encouraged to wear full plate (excepting legs) into battle. When they are not used as fodder, they are excellent craftsmen and work as slaves. A Duergar may either train as a warrior with mace fighting, or a slave with crafting skills (Smithing, mining). |
Roleplaying a Duergar: The Gray Dwarves live out their lives under the harsh rule of the Drow. They are given little opportunity to better themselves, and are kept under strict supervision. Any thought of rebellion is crushed with wicked resolve. This slavery gives them a wicked attitude towards battle, and when given the opportunity to let out their anger in combat, they take it. They hold the same rank as any slave, and must bow before any Drow master they see. They must also not speak directly too a Drow, unless spoken too. The Duergar hold a fierce hate towards the Illithid, and, even to their own harm, they will attack the creatures if the chance presents itself. They are resentful of other dwarves, and gladly fight them in battle. They hold a deep faith for the Gazer Gorgoraath, and often make analogies to those means. "Let tae unbl'nkin' eye m'ke 't'soo!" A war cry for a Duergar would be, "F'r tae Eye!". Or, another such suggested warcry; "Dok Grim!" (The Eye unyielding.) Duergar speak like most Dwarves, with a heavy accent. However, these Gray dwarves have forgotten most of the traditional Dwarven language. If you are having trouble speaking like a dwarf, talk with another Duergar or Dwarf to learn how to better speak. |
