The Ghost of a Chimneysweep

There are many ghosts at Swansea. In 1965 the ghost of a chimney sweep was said to be haunting a house in the district of Morriston: even a policeman was said to have witnessed the phenomenon. And some very strange things seemed to have happened at the house of a Methodist minister when he lived in St George Street (now Hanover road), off Walter road in Swansea. The Rev. David Phillips is described in the published accounts of his case, as "one of the keenest and wittiest of men"; not the kind of person to be easily hoodwinked. Yet he was completely puzzled when his furniture started to move around his rooms especially when his back was turned. His bed in particular repeatedly turned itself upside down! Strange noises added to the mystery. Doors opened and closed of their own accord; chairs flew around the room as if they had wings…. Day after day, it would appear that strange things were happening: articles of furniture, as large as a chest of drawers were moved and although every member of the family and several visitors heard sounds suggesting movement, no one ever witnessed the actual movement of any of the articles. After a time the furniture stopped moving, the sounds became less frequent until eventually they stopped too; as mysteriously as they had begun. No explanation has ever been found for the noises or the movement of those heavy objects.
