The Mysty Mountains
and
The Hollow Hills
Scholars say this is the oldest mountain range on the continent, and by far the most complex. This range not only consists of the main range but also includes the Kellsor Ridge, and Northern Highlands. Additionally this range extends into the sea, merging with the White Fang Mountain Range, it forms the Forever Islands. Due to the geologic age of the range, the Misty Mountains do not have the elevation found in the Troll Step Mountains or The Thunder Tooth Mountains. And the mountains are less rocky and more covered with vegetation. The highest peaks are around 8,000 feet The main range rises slowly from the west. The low foot hills of the range are often called the Hollow Hills. These are low rolling hills ranging in height of only a few thousand feet. Like the Misty Mountains the foot hills are filled with many natural caves, hence the name of the Hollow Hills. Due to this range, much of the northern area of Roane and Kellsor are covered with rolling hills or rugged low mountains. The land slowly sweeps up, from the west, into the main Misty Mountain range, then the range ends much more abruptly to the east. The base elevation to the east is much higher than to the west. As the mountains level into the area of the Northern Woods the elevation stays around 500 to 800 feet.
The minerals in this mountain range consist of raw materials such as iron ore and coal. Diamonds and other gems can be found within the range by a skilled miner. Copper is the most common of the precious metals, silver would be the second most common but rare. There are veins of gold and platinum but they are very rare.
Vegetation is mostly deciduous throughout the range, Conifer trees are found on higher elevations, mixed vegetation is found to the north and east. Water flows constantly within these mountains. There are few if any natural ponds or lakes. Springs continuously feed mountain streams and rivers, which flow with a fast cold water. Due to the moisture of the region, fog is common within the hills, giving the range its name.
Dwarves:
There are three major dwarven kingdoms within the Misty Mountains. The Mines of Thororlam are located within the southern end of the range. These dwarves deal more with the human lands of Barovia than the western lands. A moderate sized kingdom for the dwarves, Thororlam consists of several separate mines and one large mine, Gundu-Arez is the capitol of the kingdom of Thororlam. Iron, coal, copper, and gems are mined from this area.
The Mines of Deep-Water Well are located within the central area of the range. A much more open and outgoing kingdom, Deep-Water Well is more easily found than any other dwarven kingdom of the Misty Mountains, however gaining access is not as easy. A small kingdom and a moderate sized mine, Deep-Water Well snakes its way into the bowels of the mountains and produces iron, gems, silver and other precious metals.
Within the northern end of the range is the kingdom of Turgoryth. The most isolated and hidden of kingdoms within the Misty Mountains. The mines of Turgoryth are also the largest mines within the range. These dwarves have delved deep within the mountains and draw forth many riches from the earth.
Fissure Run Mine
In the south central range of the Misty Mountains is the Fissure Run Mine. This is not a dwarven mine but one operated by goblins. This mine produces iron, coal, and some diamonds. Any dwarf seeing this mine would be appalled, for it dose not respect the mountain but scares it. Great holes and pits are made to rip out the resources. Fissure Run is an open goblin community. The ruler and workers have a much less evil outlook on life and often trade with human communities east and west of the mountains. This is a major producer of raw material for Armania.
