What Has Been Done So Far?
Governments
are quite eager to look into the possibility of Internet voting. However,
so far no national elections have been conducted using remote Internet
voting. This is mostly due to the security concerns discussed in the previous
section, and the current prediction is that it will still take a while
before remote Internet voting will be implemented. Nevertheless, Spain,
the Netherlands, Sweden and the US are a few examples of countries that
have started to conduct Internet voting trials (Europe Commission, 2001).
Belgium has been using Internet voting with touch screens at polling stations
since 1995. France and Japan have also conducted trials. In Japan a certain
amount of people were chosen to try Internet voting after they had voted
in the conventional manner (EuropeCommission,
2001).
