Phookas
Phookas are wild spirits that lure humans to ride them, often in the form of a horse or billy-goat.They are tricksters that lead the human on a ride through the night, often until dawn. At this point they throw off the rider.If the human being is lucky, they don't get devoured.
Long ago, on the night of May first, my ex and I were going to bed. He was drunk of course, and I was sad remembering it was the anniversary of my mother's death. Just before midnight, I looked out the window behind the bed. There in the street was a donkey eating our garbage. Where it came from I couldn't have told you...there weren't any donkeys in the neighborhood that I knew of. Daren and I chased it into our yard, where it smashed my tomatos and ran promptly back out the gate.We chased it for hours, getting close enough to pet it before it would bolt away down the street. We followed it through alleys, almost all the way through the neighborhood. We finally gave up and walked home. It wasn't until the next year that I realized we had an encounter with the Phooka.
