Women who want to spark, or rekindle the flame of love have practiced witchcraft throughout the ages. Fortunately, love spells are among the easiest to cast, even for a beginner. A woman in love rarely has any trouble summoning the waves of emotion that trigger the magic. (It's not hard to concentrate on bewitching a man when you think of him day and night anyway.). This section gives some simple spells for catching, and holding your man. In using them bear in mind that love magic, more than any other, must be concealed from its object; the trick is to catch him with his defenses down. Don't risk, discovery; tell no one, but no one, what you're up to.

Don't waste your time trying to enchant a man who's on the other side of the world, a movie star, politician, etc. Though these rituals are very effective, they do not work over great distances. Also, unless you're a highly skilled sorceress, it's almost impossible to attract someone you don't know. Concentrate on the boy next door, and he may be knocking on your door soon!

The best-known way of getting a man to fall in love with you is to bewitch him through a doll that represents him. Ideally, you should make the doll yourself. Carve it from some natural material such as wax, wood or clay; bake a doughboy (be sure to use lots of spices), or sew a rag doll. A store bought figure can be used, but it won't be nearly as powerful as the homemade.

Some very personal belongings of the man you want to enchant, a lock of his hair, a fingernail clipping, something he's worn should be incorporated into, or attached to, the doll. Add also one of your nail clippings, a strand of your hair, etc. Use as many of these personal things as possible the more links you create between you, your beloved and the doll, the stronger your spell.

Start the ritual on the first day of the new moon. Name the doll, aloud, after the man and scratch or write his name on the figure. For writing, your blood is best, but if you use ink (red, of course) add a drop of your blood to it.

Next, using a thorn or pin, gently prick the figure's heart (don't overdo it or you kill him) saying:

Or wrap the doll in three ribbons of different colors; black, white and red are often used, but you may choose any shades. As you wrap say:

If you've baked your doll, eat a piece of it every night, saying,

Do any one of these rituals, but always the same one, for fifteen minutes each evening until the moon is full; at the next new moon, start again.

If be doesn't respond soon enough, light a red candle and lightly singe the doll's feet, saying:

Before long, his feet should carry him straight to you (unless you've burned them too badly).

When you're not working with your doll, wrap it in a clean cloth of silk, linen or cotton never a synthetic fabric and put it away where no one but yourself can find it.

Though synthetic fabrics are frowned on, there is nothing in witchcraft lore that prevents the use of some twentieth century developments. Thus instead of a doll, you can use his photograph to represent the one you love. However, the spell is then cast a little differently.

At the new moon, place a photograph of yourself and one of your beloved (both in about the same scale) on top of each other. Pin them together with a red headed dressmaker's pin saying,

Wrap the two photos, still pinned together, in a net and hide them. Take them out at each new moon and repeat the words given above until the man is mad for you.

The right present can work a powerful spell over a man. The idea is to get him to carry part of you, or your spirit, with him at all times and/or to plant your essence near him. Do either, and he'll never get you out of his heart.

Gifts made with your own hands are particularly effective since they're laden with your spirit. Besides, while making them you can increase their power. Try this spell if you knit, crochet or power sew something for your beloved. Start the object during a new moon and finish it at a full moon. Each time you start, and stop, work say:

Never give him a gift without first keeping it close to you. If possible, wear it preferably next to your skin for seven days and seven nights; then give it to him. If you can't wear it, sleep with it under your pillow for the same length of time. If the gift is jewelry, be sure that it's set with your birthstone not the gentleman's.

If you don't have a believable pretext for giving a gift, try to get him to carry something of yours without knowing it. Swap your ballpoint pen for his or conceal something that's been part of you; a tear, a strand of hair, on his clothes, in his car or, best of all, in his bed.

Whether your beloved is a man you're trying to win, or the man you've been married to for twenty years, it's a good idea to have him carry something of you with him always. No love is ever completely safe; why take chances?

Another way to work your way into a man's heart (or make sure you stay there) is to steal something from him. Of course you return it after you've worked your magic on it. Be sure to pick something you can wear, his belt, scarf, tie tack, etc. Wear it day and night for a week; sleep with it and touch it frequently. By the time you give it back, it will be as much yours as his.

With a few strands of your beloved's hair, you can cast a very powerful spell. At the new moon, braid his hair together with a lock of yours and a red silk thread. Work in a drop of your blood to strengthen the spell. Fasten the ends together to form a circle. If the braid is long enough, wear it as a bracelet or ring: if it's not, put it in a locket or a small red silk bag. Keep it on your person until the man is yours.

If you have a knack for gardening, you may be able to turn it into still another means for bewitching your man. Take a new flower pot; fill it with earth (preferably soil in which he has  walked) and plant a marigold in it. Pronounce the name of your heart's desire over the plant, and each time you water it say:

If the plant doesn't flower, you're out of luck. If it dies, he's out of luck for good. However, if it thrives and blooms, so shall his love for you.

Another charming, old-fashioned way to make a man fall in love with you is to pluck a blade of grass from his garden. (If he's a city dweller, make do with a leaf from one of his potted plants; if he doesn't have any plants, give him one.). Go out before sunrise place the grass, or leaf, in your mouth. Then turning to the east for the first two lines, to the west for last two, say:

Even after winning the man of your choice, the course of true love may not run smoothly. As mentioned earlier, a wise woman will see that her lover always carries something imbued with her spirit. However, one can't be too careful, so here are a few more spells to bind him to you.

To make certain that your husband will love you for at least seven years, keep a bunch of yarrow hanging over your bed. If he's not as ardent as you'd like, put a pine cone under his pillow or near his bed. (Dried turkey bones are another old favorite for this purpose.) Or, put a drop of your blood on a chicken heart, and bury it near the threshold of a door he uses often.

If you're not afraid of over stimulating him, try to touch the back of his neck, without his knowledge, while whispering softly:

Do this often enough, and he will soon be filled with an uncontrollable passion for you.

To protect his love from the wiles of another woman, pluck a twig from a laurel branch. Break it in half, and scratch your initials on one piece, his on the other. Give the half with your initials to him, and keep the half with his initials.

(You can do the same thing with an old coin or, better still, a heart shaped piece of jewelry.) Be very careful not to lose your half, for if a woman finds it she will then be able to take your lover from you, if she puts her mind to it.

It you have quarreled with the man you love, write your initials and his, in red ink, on a piece of wood. Draw three circles around the letters, and bury the wood in the ground. He'll soon turn up. begging, for forgiveness.

 
Example

If he suddenly stops calling you, write his name on a piece of paper and tape it under the phone in a place where it will be undisturbed. At the start of the new moon, light a pink candle at the hour he is most likely to call. Let the candle burn for twenty minutes while you concentrate on his name. (If anyone else calls during this time, the spell is broken and you'll have to start over.) Do this for seven days.
