Administrator Information and Desktop Patrol Recovery

Desktop Patrol was designed to ensure that the Windows built-in Administrator account, Administrators Group and any Windows user account that contains Administrator permissions will always have access and control to Desktop Patrol.

In order to install Desktop Patrol onto a computer, you must be logged into an account with Administrator Permissions.

When Desktop Patrol is initially installed, it records the user name (that is currently logged into the computer) as the Primary Administrator of Desktop Patrol. This Primary Administrator will be the only Windows user account that has the ability to login to Desktop Patrol’s main interface via the Administrator Login window. This is because the Desktop Patrol system tray icon can be hidden from all users including all other administrator accounts. If, for whatever reason, the Primary Administrator’s Windows user account is deleted, or the actual user (of the Primary Administrator account) is no longer available to provide the Desktop Patrol Administrator Login password, you can complete the steps outlined below to regain access and control of Desktop Patrol.

Scenario #1

If you know the Desktop Patrol Administrator password and the Desktop Patrol system tray icon (lock) is visible when you log into your Windows user account (that has Administrator permissions), do this:

A.      Login to your Windows user account.

B.      Click on the Desktop Patrol system tray icon (lock) to bring up the Administrator Login window.

C.      Enter the password and click Enter to access Desktop Patrol’s main interface.

D.      Click the X in the top right corner to shutdown Desktop Patrol.

E.       Uninstall Desktop Patrol.

F.       Re-install Desktop Patrol. *Your Windows user account will now be designated as the new Primary Administrator of Desktop Patrol.

Scenario #2

If you know the Desktop Patrol Administrator password and the Desktop Patrol system tray icon (lock) is hidden or if you don’t know the Desktop Patrol Administrator password and the Desktop Patrol system tray icon (lock) is displayed when you log into your Windows user account (that has Administrator permissions), do this:

A.      Reboot the computer.

B.      Just after the computer boots and before the Windows splash screen appears on the screen, press the F8 key on the keyboard to display the Windows startup menu.

C.      Choose Safe Mode from the list and press enter on the keyboard.

D.      Login to a Windows user account (that has Administrator permissions).

E.       Go to the Start button/Run.

F.       Type in msconfig and click OK.

G.     Click the Startup tab.

H.      Remove the checkmark from the Desktop Patrol entry.

I.        Click OK.

J.        Reboot the computer to normal mode.

K.      Login to a Windows user account (that has Administrator permissions).

L.       Reinstall Desktop Patrol over the top of the existing installation. *Do not start up Desktop Patrol.

M.    Immediately, uninstall Desktop Patrol.

N.     Reinstall a new fresh installation of Desktop Patrol.

*Your Windows user account will now be designated as the new Primary Administrator of Desktop Patrol.
