The many-towered city of Iriaebor occupies a sprawling ridge above the north fork of the
River Chionthar. It is the farthest that barges can be pulled up the river, and this, combined with the fact that the city is the end point of roads coming out of Cormyr and the Inner Sea, makes Iriaebor one of the most populace and economically powerful cities in the region.
Iriaebor is called the Overland City, and it is here that many caravans form up for the overland journey to Scornubel or to be ferried downriver before making the trek across the High Moor. The bluff the city is built on is impressive and an adequate defense against most attackers, but space on the bluff is at a premium on the relatively flat ridge, so that Iriaebor has more towers than any other city of it’s size. Indeed, the various merchant houses indulge in shameless competition to exceed each other, with occasional catastrophic building collapses as a particular spell needed for construction elapses or where shoddy materials were used.
General information:
Iriaebor is an independent city-state located in the area of the Realms known as the Western Heartlands. It is a major point for caravans and trading ships of all types that are doing trade in areas of the Realms. This being said, it is not surprising that the city has a large amount of merchant house, which always seem to be feuding with one another. It is not uncommon for these feuds to become outright battles. Despite Iriaebor’s ruler, Bron, attempting to stop or even slow these feuds, they seem to only be escalating over that past few years.
Places of interest in Iriaebor
The following provides a most basic outline of businesses of interest, especially those of interest to adventurers such as yourselves, in Iriaebor to help give you a feel of the city. This is by no means a complete and full listing of all shops and services in the city, but merely the bigger and more well known ones.
Temples
The Silent Hall- Temple of Eldath (Goddess of water, springs, stillness, peace, etc)
Golden Bowl of the Goddess-Temple of Chauntea (Goddess of agriculture)
High Alter of The Moon-Temple of Selune (Goddess of the moon and stars)
Services
Cadoth the Scribe-Scribe, cartographer, and armature historian.
Yherd-Sage extraordinaire. Yherd is the most renowned sage in Iriaebor if not all of the Western Heartlands. He is on good terms with the head priests of all 3 of the cities temples, nearly every powerful mage in the city (and surrounding country side), and even with Iriaebor’s ruler, Bron. It is exceedingly rare when Yherd is unable to answer a client's questions, magical or otherwise.
Azarga-Former apprentice of Yherds' and now competitor, Azarga operates as a sage in the complete opposite manner Yherd does. While he uses his connections with powerful mages to answer questions, Azarga instead prefers to research the question herself, academically. This process is far longer, but her prices are drastically less steep than Yherd s’.
The Vault- An officially sanctioned money lending and banking operation that has a reputation for low interest rates and keeping your gold pieces safe.
The Broken Claw- An animal training company that mostly deals with dogs, horses, and a few exotics like big cats. The Broken Claw can train, or attempt to train, any animal, but the cost can be staggering high.
Weapon Smiths and Armories
The Flying Mace- A shop that deals in all manner of weapons, shields, and armor that vary in price. The more exotic or finely crafted a weapon is, the higher the price.
The Pierced Hide- A shop that is considered to me more high class than the Flying mace, the Pierced Hide deals mostly in personally crafted blades for nobles, exotic weapons, and, occasionally, magical weapons.
Ironfist’s Hammer- A smithy operated by the dwarf Ironfist, whom constructs all manor of armor for people, mounts, etc. His armor is considered to be the finest made in Iriaebor and his price reflects this.
Goods
Four Coins- A pawnshop operated by an elf named Aethros whom is well known as a fence of stolen goods and for his connections to Iriaebor’s thieves’ guilds. Aethros also specializes in (legally) liquidating goods at cut-rate prices that the cities many merchants were unable to sell themselves.
The Outstretched Hand- A medical shop catering to all manner of doctors, physicians, and clerics. The Outstretched Hand carries large amounts of pills, herbs, bandages, potions, and medicines in general & it also contains a top-notch clinic for those who can afford the heavy price.
Eagles Nest Trading House- A pawnshop of known for it’s honest dealings and fare prices when buying or selling.
The Weary Wanderer- A general store that sells everything from battle axes to salted meats to horse saddles.
