OPENING MATCH: “EXOTIC” ADRIAN STREET vs. JOE MALENKO (Referee Terry Yorkston)

-The eldest of son of Boris Malenko makes his debut in Maple Leaf Wrestling by drawing the unenviable task of taking on the crafty Street. Both men exchange holds in a fine display of European style wrestling in the early going as Malenko shows that he has learned a lot from his famous father. The two men prove to be evenly matched on the mat as they weaved their way in and out of holds, proving that for each hold there is indeed an counter hold. Street stays one step ahead, however, and takes the pin fall victory with a bulldog headlock just after the twelve minute mark.

RESULT: ADRIAN STREET BY PINFALL AT 12:10

SECOND MATCH: RIC FLAIR vs. BARRY ORTON (Referee Fred Atkins)

-As usual, Bobby Duncum provided counsel for the young Orton for this match. In fact, he did much more than that. In the early going it became apparent that the less experienced Orton would be no match for the ‘Nature Boy’. Duncum decided to even the odds by interjecting himself in the contest on numerous ocassions while the referee wasn’t looking. This repeated and blatant interference by Duncum led to Blackjack Mulligan’s shocking appearance at ringside. Mulligan got on the house mic and told Duncum that if he wanted to be involved in the match that he could hop up on the apron and team with Orton against him and Flair. Duncum declined, but the referee, who had grown sick of Duncum’s deplorable actions, ordered the Texas to participate in the match. Mulligan got up on the apron and tagged in, daring Duncum to do the same. A reluctant Duncum finally got in the ring but quickly tagged back out to Orton. Caught off guard, the team of Orton and Duncum never really got any kind of momentum going during the match. Mulligan gained a small measure of revenge by taking the victory for his team when he pinned Orton using the claw hold while Flair held Duncum at bay.

RESULT: FLAIR & MULLIGAN BY PINFALL AT 16:12 WHEN MULLIGAN PINNED ORTON

THIRD MATCH: THE ROUGEAUS & STEVE WRIGHT vs. THE VALIANTS & AKIO SATO (Referee Terry Yorkston)

-This match was billed as a double grudge match and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Both Sato and Wright and the Valiants and Rougeaus have been feuding for more than a month now and the hatred between all six men really showed in this battle. The team of the Valiants and Sato made their way to the ring amidst a chorus of boos as they carried the Canadian flag, that the Valiants stole from the Rougeaus earlier in the week, with them. This contest quickly erupted into a brawl as the Rougeaus had trouble containing themselves. Much of Jacques and Raymond’s time was spent in an attempt to regain the flag. This served as a big distraction to the popular Canadian duo and allowed the Valiants and Sato to control much of the match. When the Rougeaus weren’t attempting to capture the flag, there was some excellent action between Akio Sato and all three member of the opposing team. The Japanese sensation has been showing a darker side to himself as of late and even grown a full beard. One would have to wonder why someone so talented would have to resort to breaking the rules. Tempers flared throughout the contest and as was sure to happen, everything broke down into a donnybrook with all six men battling both in and out of the ring. Wright looked as though he had the match won with a reverse roll up on Sato, but the referee was distracted by the apperance of Adrian Street at ringside. While the official was tied up on the floor with the Rougeaus, Street and Jerry Valiant, Johnny clobbered Wright with the flag pole that was holding the Canadian flag allowing Sato to get a pin fall on Wright once the referee returned to the action.

RESULT: THE VALIANTS & AKIO SATO DEFEATED THE ROUGEAUS & STEVE WRIGHT, SATO PINNED WRIGHT AT 21:21

FOURTH MATCH: VANCOUVER ALL-STAR HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP-LEO BURKE © vs. MARK LEWIN (Referee Fred Atkins)

Burke made his way to the ring wearing the Vancouver All-star championship belt proudly around his waist for this anticipated rematch with the former champion Lewin. Lewin had lost the belt just days earlier on a controversial disqualification earlier and looked none to happy as stomped his way down to the ring in his heavy terry cloth ring robe. The referee took the belt off of Burke and held it high for all to see, signifying that the title was indeed on the line. Lewin, still in his robe, grabbed the belt from referee and turned around towards the crowd yelling at them that he was the rightful champion and that tonight he was going to settle things with Burke once and for all. As Lewin turned back around he was caught off guard by Burke, who executed a beautiful belly to belly suplex. The stunned Lewin kicked and flailed, but he was all caught up in his robe and could not kick out of Burke’s pin attempt! Burke quickly left the ringside area with the championship belt as an enraged Lewin kicked at the ring ropes and chased the referee around the ring threatening him.

RESULT: LEO BURKE BY PINFALL AT 0:06 WITH A BELLY TO BELLY SUPLEX, BURKE RETAINS ALL-STAR TITLE
*note-The time of this match is estimated as the opening bell apparently did not ring…

INTERMISSION

FIFTH MATCH: KING KONG BUNDY vs. BLACKJACK MULLIGAN (Referee Fred Atkins)

-Bundy was forced into this contest by Maple Leaf President Frank Tunney as part of Bundy’s punishment for his part in the attack on Canadian Heavyweight Champion Angelo Mosca in Toronto. (Bundy was also fined heavily.) Bundy seemed tenative about stepping through the ropes against the rough and tumble Texan, but eventually obliged when Bobby Duncum and Barry Orton came to ringside to offer “moral” support. Mulligan fought valiantly, but the numbers were just to great and Bundy took control of the match. Bundy used his massive girth to punish Mulligan, but he made the mistake of not going for the pin. Mulligan somehow found the strength to mount a comeback and had Bundy on the ropes when Duncum and Orton attempted to interfere yet again. This time Mulligan saw the attack coming and beat the dastardly duo to the punch. He knocked Orton off the apron and then caught Duncum attempting to sneak up from behind him. Mulligan then tossed Duncum from the ring, followed him out to the floor and continued to pound him with big right hands. Orton tried to make the situation two on one, but he was tackled by Ric Flair as he went for the double team! All four men brawled around the ringside area and then back to the locker rooms. As this happened the referee counted Mulligan out of the ring and awarded the contest to a dazed King Kong Bundy.

RESULT: KING KONG BUNDY BY COUNT OUT AT 8:37

SIXTH MATCH: HARLEY RACE vs. TERRY TAYLOR (Referee Terry Yorkston)

-The young Taylor had upset the veteran Race a couple of weeks earlier in tag team action and wanted to prove in this match that his previous victory was not a fluke. On the other side of the coin, the only motivation that Harley Race needed was simply knowing that arch rival Ric Flair had taken the youngster under his wing. Taylor looked a little lost on his way to the ring as he arrived without the Nature Boy by his side as Flair was still being tended to as the result of a post match altercation in the previous contest. The suddenly less confident Taylor looked a little shaky in the early going and the veteran Race went to work. Race dominated the early going and attempted to humiliate the less experienced Taylor. In fact, Taylor was on the defensive for the first several minutes of the match before he got things going his way. Terry fired back with a barrage of offense that had Race in trouble for a few minutes but Race was able to take advantage of Taylor going for a high risk move to early in the match and take back over the contest. Race seemed to grow stronger with each passing minute as he battered Taylor with forearms and head butts. He then began to work over Taylor’s leg in an attempt to set up the figure four leg lock that he has used in recent matches to infuriate the Nature Boy. Race finally went for this powerful submission hold but his attempt was reversed into a small package by Taylor, who almost caught Race off guard and came up with yet another pin fall on the veteran. The action continued hot and heavy for the next several minutes with Taylor eventually taking charge of the match. A house of fire, Taylor whipped Race into the ropes, but then set to early for a back body drop. The crafty Race put on the breaks and hammered Taylor across the back with a double sledge. He then rocked Taylor with a pile driver to collect the three count. Race wasn’t satisfied with the victory, however. He continued to batter Taylor and tossed him out of the ring. He then attempted set Taylor up for a pile driver on the concrete floor! Just as Race was about the execute the manuever, which would have surely put Taylor out of commission, Ric Flair came to Taylor’s aide and jumped Race. Flair, who’s head was already bandaged from the earlier in the night, chased Race off and then went back to tend to the fallen Taylor. Taylor received a nice ovation as he was helped to the back by Flair. He appears to have only been shaken up.

RESULT: HARLEY RACE BY PINFALL AT 27:35 AFTER A PILE DRIVER

SEVENTH MATCH: THE SHEIK & KEN PATERA vs. BOBO BRAZIL & ANDRE THE GIANT (Referee Fred Atkins)

-The Sheik’s manager The Grand Wizard took the wrestling world by storm a few weeks ago when he announced that he would be taking over the world of professional wrestling by starting at the very top! Since then the Wizard has put his associate, the Sheik up against some of the best wrestlers in the world. Most recently the Sheik’s attention has been devoted towards capturing Brazil’s WWA title. A feat which the Sheik thought he had accomplished earlier in the week at the Maple Leaf Gardens. The match’s decision was reversed however, and the belt returned to Brazil thanks in part to one man, Andre the Giant, who informed the referee that the Sheik had used an illegal tactic to win. The Sheik swore revenge on the Giant and blinded him with a fireball later that night during Andre’s match with Ken Patera. Patera, the self professed “World’s Strongest Man” has renewed his association with The Wizard and is dead set on using the Giant to prove that his boastful claims are true.

This wasn’t much of a match from a technical wrestling stand point but it was certainly a spectical to behold! Patera and the Sheik attempted to wear down Brazil and keep him in the ring for as long as possible, but Brazil was eventually able to tag in the Giant. The Giant gave both the Sheik and Patera fits with the Wizard’s team only gaining control by illegally double teaming Andre. The contest degenerated into a brawl with all four men brawling in the ring. At one point the Sheik attempted to throw fire at Brazil while Patera held him, but Brazil kicked the Sheik’s hands causing the fireball to go off course and then kicked Patera low. Patera stumbled backwards and fell out of the ring in pain as Brazil and Andre delivered a double head butt to the Sheik, allowing Brazil to pick up the pin fall.

RESULT: ANDRE THE GIANT & BOBO BRAZIL AT 11:45, BRAZIL PINNED THE SHEIK

MAIN EVENT-20 MAN OVER THE TOP BATTLE ROYAL WITH THE WINNER GETTING A WORLD TITLE SHOT ON 10-8-81 (Referees Terry Yorkston and Fred Atkins)

-Twenty of the best wrestlers in the world make their way to the ring, each wanting a coveted shot at Dusty Rhodes title. The Valiants come out carrying the Rougeaus’ Canadian flag. The Sheik and Ken Patera come out together with the Grand Wizard keeping the peace between the two of them and trying to talk strategy. Duncum, Bundy and Orton come out grouped together and seem to have a game plan as well. Ric Flair and Terry Taylor make their way out and get a big pop out of the crowd. Next Andre the Giant makes his way out to the delight of the crowd. He has to be the odds on favorite in this kind of match. Leo Burke comes to the ring wearing the All-star championship belt to a solid ovation. Wait what’s this! Mark Lewin has just hit Leo Burke from behind with a double sledge and he’s taking off with the Vancouver All-star title! Burke is back up and he is hot on Lewin’s heels. Lewin takes off through the crowd and leaves through a side exit. Burke follows close behind. They’ve left the building! Fans, Mark Lewin and Leo Burke, who were both scheduled to compete in this battle royal, have both left the building. It looks like Lewin is high tailing it back to Vancouver with the All-star Championship unrightfully in his possession!

The rest of the wrestlers make their way into the ring and the match is now under way. All remaining combatants brawl in the ring. It looks as thought the huge Andre the Giant has been singled out in the early going by the rest of the field. Many on the wrestlers dog pile on the Giant and attempt to push him towards the ropes. Meanwhile the Valiants are just sitting back in the corner enjoying the view and laughing as the rest of the wrestlers try and throw the Giant out of the ring. Hey, Johnny is still carrying the flag with him what is that all about! This is supposed to be a match! The Rougeaus have hit the ring! The Rougeaus have hit the ring! Johnny and Jerry head for the hills with the Canadian flag, Johnny going between the ropes but Jerry bailing out over the top. Jerry Valiant has been eliminated. Wait, the Rougeaus are going after the Valiants in an attempt to regain their flag! Jacques and Raymond take off running and jump over the top rope and to the floor to continue the persuit. Both Rougeaus have eliminated themselves, but it doesn’t seem to matter to them. All they seem to care about is regaining their flag!

Meanwhile the rest of the wrestlers remain tied up with Andre, but they seem to be making some progress. Bobo Brazil tried to come to Andre’s aid, but is tossed from the ring by Bundy. Bobo shakes his head in disgust as sits on the arena floor. Bundy, Patera and The Sheik led the charge to eliminate the Giant from the match. The Giant is now backed up against the ropes. Patera and Bundy are lifting him! They are lifting the Giant! Andre goes tumbling out of the ring! Andre has been eliminated! Andre has been eliminated! Patera and the Sheik celebrate in the ring but what’s this! The Giant is back up and he has both the Sheik and Patera by the hair! He’s pulling them out of the ring! Andre has just eliminated The Sheik and Ken Patera! A brawl has broken out on the floor with Andre and Brazil pairing off with Patera and the Sheik. Officials are attempting to separate the four men, but they are out of control. Harley Race charges at Ric Flair but Flair ducks and Race goes tumbling out of the ring. Hey wait! That’s not fair! Race notices that the officials are all tied up with the brawl and slides back into the ring. Brazil, Andre, The Sheik and Patera are all eventually sent to the back.

Johnny Valiant slinks back to the ring without the flag this time. He has apparently left it with brother Jerry. Wait, Johnny isn’t entering the ring, instead he is hiding under it. None of the officials noticed him sneak back out here, but he is in fact a legal man. He never went out over the top rope. Meanwhile it looks like Adrian Street is doing an excellent job of avoiding all of the bigger men in the ring and is doing quite nicely to have survived this long. King Kong Bundy tosses Terry Taylor over the top, but Taylor holds onto the ropes, drops down to the apron and rolls back into the ring to remain in the match. Steve Wright throws Akio Sato over the top rope to eliminate him. Wright turns around and is double teamed by Orton and Duncum, who both grab and hand full of hair and simultaniously toss the German star from the ring. Duncum and Orton turn around only to be met by a double clothesline by Blackjack Mulligan that send both of them sailing over the top rope! Blackjack Mulligan and King Kong Bundy then square off in a stare down and begin trading blows!

There are now only seven wrestlers left in contention for the WCFL title shot. Wait, what are the Rougeaus doing back down here? They are pulling Johnny V. out from under the ring! Valiant kicks and screams as the Rougeaus toss him back in the ring. Johnny has his back turned to the action and is yelling at the Rougeaus. Terry Taylor comes up behind Valiant and dump him over the top! Johnny Valiant has been eliminated. There are now six men remaining. Flair and Race pair off with each other as the chop and punch one another in the corner. Street and Taylor pair off with Street taking over on the exhausted youngster. Meanwhile, the two big bulls, Mulligan and Bundy square off trading some very hard shots. Mulligan and Bundy trade punches back and forth. Wait, Bundy isn’t firing back. Mulligan’s shots are going unanswered! Bundy stumbles back towards the ropes. Mulligan runs towards him, but Bundy drops and pulls down the ropes. Mulligan goes tumbling out of the ring. Bundy looks unstopable!

Bundy stands motionless in the center of the ring just watching Flair tear into Race and Street tear into Taylor. Flair and Race notice this and stop brawling for a second. Bundy backs off saying that he has no problem with either of the men. Flair lights up Bundy with a big right hand! Wait, now Race just nailed Bundy! Race and Flair are trying to out do one another and King Kong Bundy is the victim here! Bundy is stunned! He wobbles back to the rope. Flair and Race look at each other. They could resort back to brawling with one another, but no! They have joined hands. Double clothesline! King Kong Bundy has been eliminated! Bundy has been eliminated! Flair and Race look at each other for a split second and then go right back to brawling! Meanwhile, Terry Taylor is coming back on Street. Taylor with a series of rights to Adrian’s jaw. Adrian is rocked. Taylor signals that he is going for the five-arm. On the other side of the ring Flair is having his way with Race! Taylor bounds off the ropes and leaps at Street but the Exotic One side steps the move and street lands gut first across the ropes. Street give Taylor a shove off of the ropes and then turns around to see Flair try a cross body block on Race that sends both men over the top rope. Adrian Street celebrates his victory but the a puzzled look comes across his face. The bell hasn’t sounded yet. Street turns around to see Terry Taylor hanging on for dear life. Street approaches Taylor, but Taylor skins the cat and grabs Street in a head scissors pulling him over the top rope and to the floor! Terry Taylor has won the battle royal! An exhausted Taylor finally falls to the floor just a split second after Street hits the ground. Terry Taylor gets the shot at WCFL World Heavyweight Champion Dusty Rhodes on the 8th in London!

RESULT: TERRY TAYLOR WINS LAST ELIMINATING ADRIAN STREET
