M.X. Ogden on Mike & Mike in the Morning

August 31, 2011

OUR SCENE FADES IN WITH VIDEO FOOTAGE OF BOTH MIKE GOLIC AND MIKE GREENBERG, EACH SPEAKING ON CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES. JUST A FEW SECONDS LATER, THE LOGO FOR ESPN’S "MIKE AND MIKE IN THE MORNING" IS SHOWN AND WE FADE INTO THE ESPN STUDIO WHERE EVERYONE'S FAVORITE TALK SHOW HOSTS ARE STATIONED.

Mike Greenberg: Welcome back everybody, we've covered a lot of hot topics, but there may be none hotter than the one we're about to speak about. Not too long from now is the biggest Pay-Per-View event of the year, TWF presents Wrestlemania; and as we all know, i'’s about more than just wrestling fans. Celebrities, athletes, and musicians alike have come out to see and participate in this event, and this year will be no different. With us now for more insight is one of the men who will headline Wrestlemania, none other than M.X. Ogden.

OUR CAMERAS PAN OVER A FEW FEET TO THE LEFT, REVEALING M.X. OGDEN SITTING NEXT TO MIKE GOLIC WITH HIS TWF INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP LAYING IN FRONT OF HIM.

Mike Greenberg: Thank you for joining us, M.X., how are you?

M.X. Ogden: I'm good, definitely feeling good. Thank you guys for having me.

Mike Greenberg: Let's get straight to business and ask the obvious question; how big is it to a professional wrestler's career to be able to perform at Wrestlemania?

M.X. Ogden: It's our Super Bowl, our World Series... It's everything. It doesn't matter where you're positioned on the card; the simple fact that you earned a spot on the card at Wrestlemania is the ultimate honor. I can't lie, though... The fact that I'm in one of the two Main Events is something else.

Mike Golic: Now I'm a guy who comes from a Football background, and I know that a lot of guys transfer their talents from the football field to the wrestling ring. The Rock, Bill Goldberg, Brian Pillman, and most notably, Bronco Nagurski; we also can't forget the also one-time appearances by people like Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White. I know you signed with the TWF at the age of 17, but tell us about your athletic background prior to wrestling.

M.X. Ogden: Those guys are all legends, and we can't forget about guys like Monty Brown and Ron Simmons. For me, though, I was signed at a young age. While in High School, though, I was All-District at Cornerback for Football, as well as All-State as a Center for Hockey. Coming up in New Orleans, that's not as impressive considering Hockey isn't too popular, but I did receive a scholarship from North Dakota before tearing my ACL.

Mike Greenberg: Now, you were born near Toronto, is that where your hockey background comes from?

M.X. Ogden: I was born in Hamilton, which is a city near Toronto, and that's definitely where the background for my career as a hockey player came from. It’'s also the background for my wrestling, which is why I decided to take a chance at a young age.

Mike Golic: That wasn't easy for you, though.

M.X. Ogden: No, definitely not. It's not easy for any wrestler, though; so don't think of me as an exception. Most people in professional wrestling come from a rough background, and that's why a place like the TWF has become more of a family than a corporation.

Mike Greenberg: Going back to your sports background, who are your favorite teams or athletes?

M.X. Ogden: I'm actually a big New York Knicks, Cincinnati Bengals, and Seattle Mariners fan. In terms of players, I love Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Sidney Crosby, and Chad Ochocinco. In terms of all-time favorites, though, there's no one better than Iverson, Griffey, or Barry Sanders.

Mike Golic: No love for your Saints or Hornets?

M.X. Ogden: Ha, I do love my Saints, I'm actually a huge Aaron Brooks fan, believe it or not. It simply seems like the popular thing to do, nowadays, so I hold my fanship close to me. As far as the Hornets go, I've been a Knicks fan since birth and Allan Houston caught my eye more than any Hornet could. Chris Paul, however, needs to stay put.

Mike Greenberg: Why don't you tell us about your struggles on your way to the TWF?

M.X. Ogden: I grew up in a not-so-great part of New Orleans, and at 17, I decided I was going to re-locate to the east coast. I had dropped out of High School after my injury and decided I'd try living in the Big Apple, New York City. My grandfather was a Brooklyn Dodger fan until the day they moved, so I was excited, but I've got to admit... There was no bigger influence than my personal idol, Frank Sinatra. I hit that city like "Broadway" Joe Namath and I was determined to make something of myself. Unfortunately, you gotta start at the bottom. I worked minimum wage jobs for three months before meeting a guy named Mikey Whipwreck at the club I worked for. He told me I had a good build and look and I should come by his gym out in Deer Park.

Mike Greenberg: And you did?

M.X. Ogden: What better did I have to do? I was wiping up puke off the floors of a strip club before that.

THE MEN SHARE A COLLECTIVE LAUGH BEFORE OGDEN CONTINUES SPEAKING AGAIN.

M.X. Ogden: But yeah, I went out there and visited and to my surprise, I saw guys going at it in the ring like I'd never seen before. Brian Myers and Brett Matthews were the first two guys to introduce themselves to me, who we all now know as Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder, and they told me that if I wanted to make it, I had to be dedicated. I didn't even know what I was even trying to make it in, but as an ex-athlete, I salivated at the prospect of competition. My knee was a concern, but I jumped right in with guys like Dickie Rodz and Mason Raige, two of the top guys in the company. They kicked my ass pretty bad, but I took a beating. From there, it was just a few months of hard work before Raven, a guy who was on the TWF roster at the time, came by to pay a visit to his former ECW buddy. Whipwreck gave him word of me and luckily I impressed Raven enough for him to put in word to me to the head of the TWF, Travis Wakeman. I got a tryout and eventually I was signed to a Developmental deal. From there, it's all history.

Mike Greenberg: That's an incredible story, but let's fast forward to today. You have what I'd assume is the biggest match of your career, which happens to be on the biggest event of the year. How much pressure are you feeling as you have the chance of a lifetime to become the face of your company on the biggest stage?

M.X. Ogden: When you put it like that, it seems insurmountable...

THE MEN AGAIN SHARE A LAUGH, BUT OGDEN QUICKLY HEADS BACK TO BUSINESS.

M.X. Ogden: In all seriousness, though, there is an indescribable amount of pressure heading into the match. But, I'm ready for it. I've worked all my life to get to this place in my career, and I'm not going to let it pass by.

Mike Greenberg: We're pressed for time, so we've got to wrap things up, but tell us what you feel about Wrestlemania the event.

M.X. Ogden: This is an event that's not only great for the wrestlers, but also for the fans. We've got the first ever TWF Fan Expo, we've got celebrity appearances, and I think that's what this industry is all about. Getting people excited and involved in what I'm proud to call my life.

Mike Greenberg: I know I'm going to order it, and I assume Mike is as well, so best of luck to you in your quest for the Universal Championship.

Mike Golic: Thank you for appearing here today, it's an honor to meet a fellow sports warrior.

M.X. Ogden: Thank you guys for having me, it's been great.

Mike Greenberg: That was M.X. Ogden, TWF Superstar, and potentially the next World Champion. Make sure you check him out at Wrestlemania, folks, and stay tuned in because when we come back, we'll have Buster Olney on to discuss the possibility of a sub .500 team bearing both the Cy Young Award Winner and MVP.
