It was Steve Austin's first title shot in the NOWF, when he was set to take on Shawn Michaels at the first Hardcore Slam event. At the time, Austin was still part of the New Era group, and interference from Dean Malenko helped the Rattlesnake land the Stone Cold Stunner to win his first NOWF gold.
