After winning the NOWF's second Emperor of the Ring tournament, Curt Hennig was scheduled to take on Bobby Mills for the World Championship at the second Hardcore Slam event. Mills, however, got into a contract dispute with the NOWF, took his ball, and went home. As a result, Hennig was awarded the title as the recognized No. 1 contender.
