Big Elm
from Nut to Tree
Big Elm was opened in 1993 using West Virginia School Building Authority funds. The school board bought thirty-five acres of land to build the new school. Big Elm is all on one level and is completely air-conditioned. The school has five kindergarten teachers, six first grades, five second grades, five third grades, five fourth grades, and four fifth grades. Special education services consist of pre-school handicapped class, a physically handicapped class, two teachers for the mentally impaired students, two teachers for learning disabled students, three speech therapists, and four special education aides.
In addition to regular classroom teachers, specialists provide instruction in library, computer lab, music, art, and physical education. Children attend different special classes each day for forty minutes.
Every classroom has three computers which are utilized to teach basic skills using Josten's Learning programs.
