So what do you need to cleanse you ask? Well basicly the area you will be practicing in (your sacred space) and your tools. This should be done before you do any magickal workings or rituals.
You may think that it's not necessary to cleanse and consecrate all of your tools and you physical space, but it really is. What it does is remove any negative energies that surround your space and tools and than consecrates them with positive and loving energies that come from you. It helps to make your tools more "in tune" with your vibrations... essentially they will work better with you once you do this.
My methods involve using the power of the Elements to cleanse. I use a lot of visualization in my rituals and spells, so you're not going to find a lot of fancy words here. I have an item that represents each of the elements... Air is incense, Water is water, Fire is a candle and Earth is dirt or salt.
Choose the area that you will be using. If you have a permanent altar this will be easy, but if not I would choose an area that you will not be disturbed in. It is also important to work in an area that you feel comfortable in. The first step to visualization and concentration is to be comfortable and relaxed. I usually start with my broom and sweep in a circle around my altar. I can envison all of the negative "dust" being swept out of my circle. I then move onto Earth and sprinkle salt or dirt around the circle. Visualize the salt cleansing and empowering the area for positive use. At this point you can say something to the Element if you want. I repeat the process for all the remaining elements and when I'm done I stand in the centre of the altar and ask the God and Goddess to be present for this cleansing and to bring love to this circle. I envison a white light coming from the sky and filling my sacred space with positive energy and love.
For my tools I bascily do the same thing. Every time you get a new stone, gem or whatever, it is very important to cleanse the tool. It should only have to be cleansed once unless someone else touches your tools. Even if they are a dear friend, they can sometimes be carrying energy that is not in sync with yours. To cleanse the tool I again start with Earth and sprinkle salt or dirt on the tool and use the same visualization process I stated above. I repeat for all the elements and when these are completed I hold the tool over my pentacle. This is when I call on the God and Goddess to help in my cleansing.
Even if you made the tool yourself you still might want to cleanse the item. All the supplies you used to make your tool have come from someone else, that you don't know. Better safe than sorry.
IMPORTANT NOTE!! Don't ever touch another person's tools unless they give you permisson first. You know how upset you get when someone starts to play with your favourite athame that you've spent years with. Some people are very particular about their tools, so again... better to be safe than sorry!
