Freedom. If we were free, we could be spiritual in any way we choose. We could be religious – or not. We could go to church or stay home and pray in our bedrooms. We could worship in groups or in solitude. We could choose. What if our beliefs did not fit neatly into any pre-organized religious package? If we were free, we could create a new package. What if I believe in Jesus and the Goddess? That’s okay – if we were free. What if I believe in the powers of the Earth and Heaven? That’s beautiful – if we were free. If we were free, we would not have to be scared. To believe in something new would not be wrong. To believe in something different would not be a sin. If we were free. Why should we be free? Because it is our right. Our right to be free.
Freedom. Why should society care? Why should we be free? Freedom of choice. Freedom of thought. Freedom of religion. These freedoms lead to diversity. Change. Variety in our world. What is religion? What is spirituality? It is a lens. A way we see the world. Without these diverse lenses our world would be plain. Flat. Black and white. Boring. Without these lenses we would never learn. Grow. Expand. Make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes. We would not be human. If we were all the same, then why exist? If higher powers meant for us to all believe in the same things – then why don’t we? Why do we have Christianity? Buddhism? Baha’i? Hinduism? Paganism? Judaism? Sikhism? Taoism? Because we are different. We do believe in diversity. Variety. We do believe in freedom.
We believe in freedom. But are we free? No. People still tell us, we are wrong. People still tell us that we have not seen the light. People still tell us that we are doomed. Why? Because it is what they believe. They believe that they are right. That they are the one true way. If we are not their way – we are wrong. Sinful. Doomed.
We believe in freedom. But are we free? No. I am Pagan. But I cannot marry as a Pagan. I cannot take my holidays off without using sick days. I cannot declare my children as Pagans. I legally, cannot be Pagan. There is an imbalance. A legal injustice. Why can I legally be one religion, yet not another? Because… I am not free. WE are not free.
Freedom. When will it come? When will we be free? Free to be spiritual. Free to have choices. Free to be ourselves. We will be free when the world can embrace diversity. Change. Variety. We will be free when society can open its eyes. When it can see that there isn’t only one true way. That the true way, is your way. But your way, will never be my way. We each have our own path. Our own destiny. Our own future. No one can tell us we are wrong. No one can tell us we are doomed. When will we be free? When we realize that we are not.
