Isis. One of the more famous Egyptian Goddesses of our times. She is what I picture when I pray and worship. So sit back and relax and together we'll explore the myth and history of Isis.
From left to right: Horus, Set, Thoth, Khnum, Hathor, Ra, Amon, Ptah, Anubis, Osiris and Isis.
Isis was thought to be the daughter of the God Geb (Earth) and the Goddess Nut (Sky). She was the wife and sister of Osiris and the mother of Horus.
Throughout the ages, Isis played many roles. She is most well-known for being the Goddess of the Earth, fertility and creation (motherhood). She is described as the essence of feminine energy and being. Some Christians have compared her to Mary, mother of Jesus.
Above is a picture of her with her original headdress. An empty throne. It belonged to her murdered husband Osiris - she wears it to honor him. She is also depicted with a more circular red headdress.
Isis was also adept in the areas of magick. She was taught her abilities from Thoth. Her magickal powers were created from the rod that she is sometimes shown holding.
"Renowned for her skillful use of witchcraft and magic, Isis was particularly remembered by the Ancient Egyptians as 'strong of tongue', that is being in command of words of power 'which she knew with correct pronunciation, and halted not in her speech, and was perfect both in giving the command and in saying the word' 'Egyptian Magic'. In short she was believed, by means of her voice alone, to be capable of bending reality and overriding the laws of physics."
- Graham Hancock, Fingerprints of the Gods
Osiris, Isis' husband, was murdered and dismembered by Seth. After the murder, Isis reassembled the body of her husband - taking the role of the Goddess of the Dead. She impregnated herself with Osiris' corpse - resulting in the birth of Horus.
She hid the child from Seth, for fear that he would suffer the same fate as his father. Horus later defeated Seth, becoming the first fuler of the United Egypt. Isis, due to her connection with Horus, was seen as the mother and protecor of all pharaohs.
