So you've decided that this is a path that you want to pursue... that's wonderful news. It's a great feeling when you finally find a religion that works with you and your beliefs. Now comes the hard part...
I wasn't kidding when I said that being a Witch is hard work. I'll start by talking about "The Year and a Day" rule. Most books you will find follow this rule very closely. Once you have decided to study and pursue the Wiccan/Pagan path you must study and practice for one year and a day. This means you read every book you can get your hands on, go to every website possible and talk to as many people as you feel comfortable. Live the life... meditate, have a few rituals, create an altar, work on your visiualization techniques etc. If after 366 days, you feel this is the right path for you, then you can perform a self dedication ceremony.
The self dedication ceremony simply consists of verbally dedicating yourself the God and Goddess. I sat outside on a full moon and told them that I've come home... I had found my true path and I would continue to follow this path until it no longer feels right (if that time ever came).
Remember that it's okay to discover that this isn't the right path for you. If it didn't feel right but you still continued to practice, you be being dishonest to yourself and the God and Goddess. Not everyone follows the same path. What works for you, doesn't necessary work for me. Acceptance is important in any religion.
Fads are something that need to be mentioned. There are more people than I can count how start practicing Wicca or Paganism for shock value and nothing else. These people don't stay in the religion long... two years, maybe three. Many people are attracted to the word "magick" and aren't really willing to do all the work behind it. Sometimes these people give Wiccans and Pagans a bad name, only because they are spreading false information. Make sure that when you start calling yourself a Witch or Pagan, that you mean it!
