AJ was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on January 9,1978. A.J. was four years old and an only child when his parents got divorced. One night his father left without a word, and AJ never saw him again. This dramatic event caused a lot of pain for A.J. and his mom, but ultimately made them very close as a result.
A.J. would've probably become a writer or a poet if he hadn't gone into showbiz first. (In fact he has talents for both of those other things, and you never know-he could still do them!) Luckily for his fans,though, his mom recognized A.J.'s talent for singing and dancing when he was very young and encouraged him to do as much as he could.
A.J.'s first acting job was as Dopey in Snow White when he was just a kid. That part was only the beginning. Amazingly, A.J. had already appeared in twenty-seven plays and musicals by the time he was in sixth grade! He acted in classics such as Nutcracker, Fiddler On The Roof, and The King and I. Then, when he was in junior high, he began his television career by landing parts in Nickelodeon's Hi, Honey I'm Home and Welcome Freshmen.
During this time in his life, A.J. also took acting,dance, and singing lessons to build on his natural talents. When A.J. was fourteen, he met Howie D. through his vocal coach, since they had the same one. After that, the two guys became friends and started to hang out and go to auditions together. The two then met Nick at other auditions.
To join Backstreet Boys in 1993, both AJ and Nick turned down offers to be in the Mickey Mouse Club, A.J. needed to have a private tutor to help him continue and finish his studies.
Denise, A.J.'s mom, is his best gal. She has also adopted the Backstreet Boys in more ways than one: She is very involved with the group and helps arrange their schedules, goes with them on tours sometimes, and has even started some of their fan clubs in other countries.
Besides being in the BSB, one of A.J.'s favorite things to do is talk- a lot. He is a regular chatter box, actually. A.J. knows he sometimes yaks too much. A.J. also spends lots of time on the phone to friends and family, especially when the boys are away on tour. While the boys love him for his constant storytelling, they also get tired of it at times. Apparently, when the boys first started touring, A.J. and Brian used to have to share a hotel room. But the thing was that A.J. wouldn't stop talking and sometimes drove Brian a bit crazy. Luckily, now each of them gets his own room when they are away touring, which is a relief to Brian.
A.J. who would describe himself as "Freaky, funky, and romantic," is also a self-admitted ham-he likes to do all kinds of crazy stuff to have fun, whether he is on or off stage. One time AJ had to wear a costume of "The Riddler"(the character in Batman) for a photo shoot-it was totally green spandex, a la Jim Carrey. So he borrowed the costume and went onstage in it that night to introduce the two opening acts for their concert. The audience went totally wild, and the guys couldn't believe he had the guts to do that. They all thought it was pretty funny.
Even when he is offstage, A.J. doesn't start hamming it up. This BSB is definitely not shy guy-he loves to be the center of attention, whether he is telling a long, colorful story to a group of people or reading poetry to girls. Howie and the other guys tease A.J. all the time about his poetic,romantic, attenion loving side.
A.J. has a serious side, too. Actually, A.J. writes his own poetry, which often becomes his inspiration for his songwriting. Since A.J.'s favorite school subject was English, it makes sense that he loves to read and write. He is considered the intellectual one in the group, because during his down time he can often be found reading Shakespeare,T.S. Elliot, or Edgar Allen Poe- all of whose work influences A.J.'s own writing. This romantic also likes to paint when he gets the chance. When A.J. gets some quiet time to himself, he plays some soothing music, turns off the lights, lies back, and relaxes for an hour or so. If he has a lot of energy and needs to let off some steam he says that shooting pool or playing a little b-ball helps him feel better.
When people have problems and they want to talk to somebody, A.J. is the man-he is a great listener. The downside is that he sometimes has trouble keeping secrets! He also admits that of all the Boys, he is the biggest worrywart and can sometimes be a bit impatient.
Kevin thinks that A.J. is a softy. A.J. doesn't like to say "no" to anyone because he doesn't like to upset others. As a result, he makes too many promises that he can't necessarily keep.
AJ and Nick are very close, probably because they are the youngest band members. They also share the same birthday month, January, which every year gives them a great excuse to throw themselves a joint birthday party. One year Nick and A.J. threw themselves a giant birthday bash at their manager's house. The party was to celebrate Nick's sixteenth birthday and A.J.'s eighteenth. They had about two-hundred friends there, and it was kickin'! The Birthday Boys got a little nutty and decided to have some fun with each other: A.J. mushed birthday cake all over Nick-even in his hair and on his shirt-and then the guys threw A.J. in the pool with all his clothes on! The place ended up being a mess, since the blowout party didn't until the wee hours of the morning.
A.J., always the party animal, loves to go out dancing in nightclubs. One time he was dancing in Paris at a club that is an artsy hangout; it plays 70's and hip-hop music. He stayed out until four-thirty in the morning, even thought the Boys were scheduled to leave on a flight at five-thirty that morning! Not surprisingly, the ended up missing that flight and had to run around like crazy to make up for it. You gotta play to pay, that's for sure.
A.J. has lots of girls who are just friends. He says he has more female friends than guy friends because most of his guy friends are heavily into the sports thing, which isn't the only thing he's interested in doing or talking about. When he hangs with his female friends, they go shopping-buying phat stuff, clothes and whatever.
Another nickname for A.J. might be "Mr.Flash," because he is the most extravagant of the Boys. He loves cltohes,funky accesories, and big jewelry. A.J. has always seen one of his several pairs of dark sunglasses and gold earrings. A.J. also collects hats, which he often wears when trying to keep a low profile in public.
An interviewer from Live and Kicking magazine once asked A.J. which three stars he'd love to invite to a party. A.J.'s answer: Jim Carrey, because he is soo funny; Geri from the Spice Girls, because she knows how to be crazy; and Geena Davis, because A.J. has harbored a crush on her for the longest time. Those answers certaintly reflect all the different sides of A.J.'s personality.
Why is A.J.'s nickname Bone?? A security guard once called A.J. Bone because is soo skinny. The name just stuck!
Brian calls A.J. "Mr.Talkative" because he is always on the phone talking to family. He's a great storyteller and loves to chat to just about anybody. He could tell stories all day long, even when the guys are really tired and aren't up for hearing another A.J. tale. A.J. loves talking soo much that he will even try to tell the guys stories about things that happened when they were with him!
Does A.J. have any bad habits? A.J. bites his nails and the skin around his fingers. He has tried everything to stop doing it, but he just can't. So it is no surprise that the thing that he least likes about his looks is his fingers.
When A.J. was born his great-grandmother knitted him a "Blankey," as he called it, which soon became his favorite. He had it for fifteen years, but once he was staying at a hotel in South Carolina, a maid threw it away, because by then the Blankey wasn't looking too good. A.J. ner got it back, which still bums him out, even though he thought he was getting too old for a blanket. To this day, he twists his clothes nervously, like he did with his Blankey long ago -he's got the holes in his clothes to prove it!
A.J. still gets nervous before every show. He also gets nervous before beginning each new song while they are onstage. When he is on the road, A.J. brings a travel diary with him although he rarely writes in it. He is also a skilled puppeteer.
When it comes to love and women, A.J. is a true romantic. A.J. says, "I'm the type of guy who likes to be there 24/7. I'm Mr.Roses." A.J. became a ladies' man at a young age.
A.J. believes in old-fashioned love and thinks it is very important to be a gentlemen to ladies. Which is something he learned from his mom, Denise. No matter how flirtatious he can be, respect will always come first.
A.J. is attracted to girls who are independent and confident. Other very import attributes for the girl of his dreams: sensitivity and a sense of humor. When it comes down to it, he wants a girl who will stick with him thorugh good times and bad, and someone for whom he can write his own poetry!
