Nick loved growing up in his family's house on Webber Road in Jamestown. Out of the five Carter kids, only Nick and his sister B.J. were born in Jamestown.

Nick's grandparents also lived in the same town. His grandfather and father owned a small lounge called the Yankee Rebel. His dad would DJ and choose what music they played at the lounge. Even when little Nicky was in diapers, he used to dance around on the dance floor. They have pictures of him as a toddler with huge headphones on, dancing around. They used to call him "Charlie Brown" because he had a round head with no hair.

Besides his love for music and dancing, his love for video games also began at a very young age. One time his family had lost little Nicky. They looked all over the place and eventually found him sitting on a stool in the lounge, playing a game of Pac-Man.

Eventually, his folks decided they wanted a change of pace and thought Florida would be a good place to make a new start. So when Nick was about five or six years old, the family packed up and headed south to Florida.

Since Nick's father was working at a retirement home, the family lived there for about a year. Nick and his sister B.J. used to play with frogs in the mud around where they lived. They have a picture of the two of them covered in mud, with frogs on their heads!

A year or two after they got to Florida, Nick started to become truly interested in performing-singing,dancing, whatever he could do in front of an audience or camera. Soon thereafter he got the lead role in his school's production of Phantom Of The Opera. Later, he was a featured vocalist in the pre-game shows for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team for their 1991-1992 seasons. By the time he was twelve, he had performed in and won the 1992 New Original Amateur Hour and was already in TV commercials for the Florida State Lottery and The Money Store. To join BSB, both Nick and A.J. turned down offers to be in the Mickey Mouse Club.

When Nick first became a member of BSB, he hadn't yet finished school, but he couldn't stay in his regular school because he needed to be on the move and have a more flexible schedule. So he did something called "home school," which meant that he still had to do all of his homework and study all of the same things that were taught at his regular school-which he did, while he was on tour! He had his own teacher, with whom he would spend two hours a day. This teacher gave him his exams, too. His dad, who often went with Nick and the boys on tour, kept an eye on his fair-haired son to make sure his school work was always done.

Nick is very close to his family and misses them a lot when they are on tour, which is quite often. He especially misses his younger siblings, for whome he used to baby-sit quite often. He tries to visit them as often as he can. His family is tight-knit and they all watch out for each other.

And it seems that Nick is not the only singing Carter. His younger brother Aaron, the twin of Angel, has a hit single out called "Crush On You," which has become an international hit.

When Nick first became a member of the Backstreet Boys,he was very young, only 13, so he has matured and grown up quite a bit over the six-year span of their career. While he admits he has learned a lot-both from being in a fast-paced business and just by going through normal teenage growing pains-he still feels he can be a kid when he wants to be. His family and friends at home probably notice the changes in Nick more since they see him only briefly with very long intervals inbetween. They think Nick is handling his fame very maturely, but they also let him be whoever he wants to be.

Being the youngest but growing up quickly allows Nick to be like almost two different people when he needs to. He can be responsible and practical when he is around people who are older than him, such as the record company people or the press. But he can also relax when he is with people his own age and just be himself.

Even though Nick is the youngest BSB, he gets equal say. All the Boys make the decisions together, from what songs they want to release from what their next project will be. They are totally supportive of each other, like a family. The older boys give Nick advice when he asks, especially since they have been through some different experiences different from his own. He has the best of both world's in a way: He may be the youngest group member, but he is the oldest sibling in his real family. He likes having four older "brothers" to help him out along the way.

Nick does do some songwriting, but mostly in collaboration with the other Boys. About five years ago, Nick started taking drum lessons and has gotten very good! Now he sometimes plays with the Boys onstage.

Nick loves to spend time at home with his folks and younger siblings. He loves to play computer games and Nintendo. He enjoys watching movies like I Love Trouble with Julia Roberts, but he isn't a huge fan of romantic flicks. He also likes to shoot hoops wiht his friends and rollerblade. When he and the guys are on the road-especially during the long hours they spend traveling from place to place-Nick loves to draw comics and cartoons of the other boys.

Nick thinks of himself as an ordinary, down-to-earth guy and hopes that any girl he ends up with wouldn't need more than that. He loves getting hugs, though, whether it's from his fans or others. Nick admits being able to cry, but he tries not to in front of people other than his family and the other Boys.

The other Boys consider Nick the most hyper of the BSB crew. But he is also very carefree, which is a trait that Kevin envies. But a combination of laid-back attitude and youth can sometimes keep Nick from being serious and getting down to business when he needs to. Howie agrees that Nick sure has a lot of energy.

Brian considers Nick the little brother he never had. He likes to teach Nick things, and thinks that Nick has grown up a lot in a short period of time. He also thinks he is very mature for his age. Nick also takes his basketball playing very seriously too.

Nick sometimes competes with A.J. for being the prankster of the group. Nick hid a sock full of stinky stuff behind the drums at one show, and during the show it began to smell very bad! Nick even gave their old manager Donna Wright fish flavored gum. Another time, Nick stole all of A.J.'s clothes from his hotel room. Knowing how much A.J. loves his clothes, we can bet he wasn't too happy to wake up the next morning with no clothes!

Nick has a rep for being the cute one of the Backstreet Boys, which is a name he doesn't mind. However, being the youngest doesn't win Nick special treatment-all the boys treat each other the same, respectfully and fairly.

How does Nick handle being a pin-up poster boy? He says that at first it was kind of weird, but he has grown used to it and likes it. He finds it very flattering. Being the modest boy that he is, he often wonders what all the fuss is all about.

Nick once had a little part in Edward Scissorhands with Johnny Dep in 1990. But if you are planning to run out and rent this flick, you might want to save a few bucks. Nick can only be seen for a few seconds as a blonde boy running across the screen.

Nick used to be afraid of flying. He is no longer fearful of it, after all he has to do it quite often now. How does he cope with that fear? He tries to sleep through as much of the flight as possible.

Believe it or not, Nick can be grumpy in the morning. By now, the Boys know when he's having a bad morning, so they take no offense.

When Nick likes someone, he gets really quiet around her-and almost ignores her! Sometimes, if he gets too close to a girl he likes, not only does he clam up, but he gets a tingly/queasy feeling in his stomach too.
