IN LOVING MEMORY OF
WILLIAM C. BARKER
NELLIS MINE #3
William C. Barker born Jan. 13, 1884 at Ashford, WV was the
last to die as the result of the mine explosion on Nov. 6,
1943. He was still alive when they brought him out of the
hole, but died on Nov. 11 in a Charleston WV hospital.
He married Bernie Adkins on Feb.6 1902, and was the father of
thirteen children, four still survive. Ms. Alice Barker, who
was 99 yrs. old in August, Mrs. Carla Fields, Mrs. Ann Raines,
and Mrs. Gwen Mann, the grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, and
other descendents too numerous to count.
He was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a dedicated
member of the Mahone Chapel located on Lick Creek Rd. He lived
by the word of God, and was never too busy to help a neighbor
build a house, or lend a hand where ever it was needed. He was
loved and respected by those who knew him, always trying to
make things better.
William Barker went to work on the evening shift in Nellis mine
#3 on Nov. 6, 1943, thinking that he would see his loved ones
when the shift was finished......he was never to go home again.
'O DEATH, WHERE IS THY STING?"
'O GRAVE, WHERE IS THY VICTORY?'
