The Boone County Commission has appointed Charlotte Halstead director of a project with goal of restoring the Nellis church and eventually housing the archives of the coal mining town. The Boone County Commission acquired the deed to the church in October, 1998, from the Boone County Board of Education.
" The cost of the project is approximately $5 million, and the groundbreaking is planned for the summer of 2000.
The underground Memorial, roughly the size of a football field and laid out to resemble an underground mine, will be the only one of its kind in the United States.
The focus of the Memorial will be the Memorial Hall, consisting of 10 gigantic pillars made of coal, and surrounded by glass where the names of every known coal miner killed in this century will be etched. There will be a statue or a special designation for the unknown miners.
Visitors to the site will learn from the exhabits and displays recreating the disasters. The Memorial will house the world's most extensive collection of books, videos, oral histories, documents and exhibits of coal mine disasters.
Upon entering the Memorial, visitors will experience first hand the dim lighting and closed-in feeling experienced by the coal miners. Room 38, containg the life-size statues of miners seemingly trapped by a roof fall, will be a sobering experience.
