"My Blue Madness"
Guilt, that yapping dog
snaps at my heel every
time you drop those tears,
the ones that leave
shadowy marks on my heart.
I know that damnation
strikes those that want
to be struck, usually
with the knotted whip
of fidelity.
Yet in the summer time,
especially in the unspeakably
beautiful heat, there lives
in me a blue madness which
seeps out of my fingertips
into my black coffee turning it bitter.
And I know
that deep in the night
I will wake to find my
heart has once again escaped
through a crack in the dark,
and I will find it tucked
in the narrow ridge of a
naked tree trunk making
love to the midnight sun
as owls watch, their big
eyes unblinking.
