"The Pessimist: Making Newton Roll Over In His Grave"
A comic by Jean Wilson
on Chaos

Newton assumed that everything was predictable.  That our universe is deterministic.  Newton preferred to think he could control everything, which indicates a bona fide egotist, there.

I AM BUTTERFLY!
HEAR ME, er, FEEL ME FLAP!

Old boy didn’t account for nonlinear effects in nature.

These fluctuations can double regularly and grow exponentially.  Consequentially, nature does things we can’t determine beforehand, and even the smallest but uncontrollable fluctuations cause changes which can grow exponentially.

The human world can be a chaotic place.

Malthus said the end of human civilization will occur due to exponential growth of the human population.  He was a little more pragmatic than Newton, and darn more pessimistic.

Destination: MARS

Who wants to believe the earth  will be overrun by human beings, swollen to obesity with the cancer of mankind eating away at it?  That space exploration might be plotting the inevitable colonies for a population excess?  Newton sure wouldn't!
