Route 66 in Illinois

Mitchell to Chain of Rocks Bridge - Route 66 bypass of St. Louis

A railroad and I-270 cut off Chain of Rocks Rd at SR 203 and I-270. You can either use I-270 to SR 3 (Exit 3) or zig zag south of I-270 by following SR 203 to Maryville Rd. Turn right and go north to Chain of Rocks Rd. If you follow SR 3, cross I-270 to Chain of Rocks Rd. Chain of Rocks Bridge is closed, but you can at least approach it from the east side. Follow Chain of Rocks Rd as far as you can. The tollbooths were on this side of the river. Use I-270 to get to Missouri.

Mitchell to Downtown St. Louis - City Route 66 in St. Louis

From Mitchell, follow SR 203 from I-270. Look for Madison Avenue (about 2 miles after I-270), there should be a right bank turn on to it. Route 66 zig-zag quite a bit for hang on. At 30th St, turn right and then left onto Grand Ave. At 27th St, make a right and then left onto State St. Follow State St. through Granite City. State St turns south into Madison. Turn right onto Broadway in Madison and head towards St. Louis. Broadway joins SR 3 in Venice. Continue west on SR 3 to the river. When SR 3 turns north, turn left and take the approach to McKinley Bridge. Cross into Missouri.
